Can the HVX200 flip the image?

Is this a true statement? Can the HVX200 LCD screen flip the image for all the micro35 users? Someone made this post in another forum, but I have never heard this. Can anyone back him up?

Flipping the camera is a completely inpracticle solution.

With the proliferation of 35mm adaptors camera manufacturers need to realise this feature is becoming more and more required. It should be a simple job for them as well.

It can flip it, yes.

It flips it when you turn the LCD around to take a self-portrait.

The only problem is controlling when this happens.

I think you need to talk to the 35mm adapter people, as they are making a product with a major flaw.

I'm totally happy with my 35mm adapter, the way I see it is you have to give up something to have such a great/inexpensive product. Give and Take. I will give up viewing it right side up to take in an incredible picture that nothing else can touch for the price.

I currently use a 5" monitor and simply turn it upside down. Works great and easy to use, just curious to know if the new HVX would make things even easier.

Flipping the LCD is something lots of shooters have advised Panasonic to do on the HVX from the beginning! It's a drag to have to add another monitor if it's not needed but ....bitching about it won't cure the problem. I think on HD anyway we've got to go for a monitor. At the moment, there is a Marshall V-R70P-HDA 7 Inch LCD Monitor for HD/SD Field Production for about $1,500 that will do the trick. You have to place the monitor upside down - apparently easy enough. Still must do a flip in post.

How easy (or difficult) would be to implement the flip lcd function in a firmware update?

I wish it would be really simple - but poeple have been asking for it for a long, long time - and Panasonic didn't do it. That makes me think it's not as simple as a firmware fix.

But I wonder why Panasonic didn't include this to begin with, especially when:

- other cams can do it
- there were clearly tons of requests and general interest in having this, a long while before the release (thus giving the manufacturer the time to change it)
- Panasonic is officially supporting some 35mm adapters, like the M2 or the G35

I think people would be pissed if they soon come up with a HVX200A that has this function (and probably others), leaving the original HVX200 owners up in the air. Of course, I'm speculating and jumping to conclusions, but another HVX200A update a la DVX would be even more unfair to the customers, now when there is the possibility of the whole firmware issue. And when the cam costs twice as much.

Mine flips! I swear!

Mine flips! I swear!

None of these cameras supports flipping the LCD. It would be nice if they did, but they don't.

My HVX flips the LCD. I promise everyone that. I just made sure it does it.

To flip: just turn the lcd upside down, as if you were taking a self-portrait of yourself. watch it from the point it starts turning til the point it's all the way around. It flips, I promise.

(note, if it makes a difference, I have a Japanese model, but I assume it's the same)

d-mac you are missing the point. What we want is to be able to view the image on the camera upside down. The HVX does not do this.

Why do we want to view the image upside down? because when using a 35mm adaptor, the image is projevted onto a rotating or vibrating ground glass, and this is where the camera focusses on. It is therefore recording an image flippied. So when you look through the lcd on your camera, everyithing is flipped 180 degrees. By having a flip on the camera, shooters would be able to see the projected image the right way up.

Some say it is not the manufacturers problem but the 35mm adaptors. However, if Redrock or Cinemek redesigned their adaptor so that the image was flipped back to normal, the costs would go through the roof and the image could be serious degraded. Flipping in post is a dodle and takes seconds.

For the forseeable future I see no choice other than to buy a external lcd monitor like the Teletest, which has the flip finction, or a Marshall which doesn't, but can be attached to the camera upside down.

sorry everyone, but think about it. It can flip the image. THAT was my point.
The LCD can flip 180 degrees. Up until about 155 degrees or so, the image is still upside down. When the LCD reaches about 155 degrees or so, the image on the LCD flips.
(I repeat.....IT FLIPS)
My point is, if you just turn the LCD 155 degrees, the image is still upside down. (it's just facing away from you)
so, obviously, the camera can flip the LCD, there's no doubt about that.

What I'm saying is, shouldn't it be easy to either
a. turn this off, so the image will still be upside down when you turn the LCD.
b. control the flip with a user menu, so it flips without turning the LCD.

both A and B would result in an upside down image, which would turn rightside up if you used a 35mm adapter. Obviously B is preferable.

So no, I don't think I'm missing the point.

I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean by turning off the LCD once you've achieve the flip? Do you mean it will not flip back when you reverse the LCD to it's original position? I'd love a control in the menu to keep a flip. I suggested that vary option back when the design was ongoing. It's a very simple thing to accomplish but was not done. You are right when you say there should be an easy way but at this point an upgrade in the menu software would have to be achieved and that is something Panasonic has not decided to do to the best of my knowledge. Too bad. It would be a nice feature.

I meant turn the function off. yes, via a menu in the camera somehow.
If that happens, then the image will be upside down when you rotate the LCD 180 degrees.
that's option A.

option B is better however.

I agree that the camera ought to have a firmware update to enable horizontal flip. I just think the camera designers weren't anticipating the popularity of the 35mm adapters.

The horizontal flip they currently have is like an ENG feature. Right?

It shouldn't be that hard to update the firmware, if they are offering updates, to offer horizontal flip on demand.

Yeah, it seems like it's designed for ENG.
I think once more people get ahold of this camera, they'll realize what I'm talking about.

You'll just have to wait for someone to open up their HVX, and figure out how the flip detection works.
What have been established so far is that it does not work like it did in the DVX with a reed relay and a magnet.

Panasonic should know, but maybe it'll just be too much work for them to implement this feature, so they won't think enough people will want it.

I think I'll have to wait til more people get this camera and understand what I'm talking about.

Everyone who has purchased a Redrock Micro35 lens adapter knows what you're talking about.

We chose the adapter because it's six to nine thousand dollars cheaper than one that has a prism in the adapter matrix to do the image flip, not to mention the loss of light in the flipping process. What is it? Two stops? More?

I bought an external 7" monitor that will flip the image for me, but it sure would be nice to have the camera flip the image, too.

Oh well. Dare to dream.

I think Anders is correct, it seems that one could mount the sensor inside the LCD rotated 180 degrees to allow the flip in the standard viewing position. Also, pardon my ignorance, but why does the ground glass need to rotate or vibrate? Is it a grain issue?
