Can someone tell me what the recorder is in this pic?

i'm looking to buy one for myself to have. Don't know what this one is. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yeah, but does it WORK??? Does it give good audio? Is it easy to use? Flexible? Does it fit his needs?

I know......silly questions. It looks cool!

Chances are it's a great piece of gear, in his price range, and perfectly suited. I just always think it's funny when somebody says "What is this? I want to buy one!"

Or it could be that he met the sound guy, respected his work, maybe even talked to him about the recorder, but forgot the name?

he was my sound mixer on my LoveFest entry. I liked the audio that I got from it and was going to do some more research into it once I remembered the name of it.

Yeah, I own one of these, and get great results. Personally, I find the preamps a very slight bit noisy, so a hotter output mic works a bit better. With NiMH AA cells I get a good amount of battery life, and they are much cheaper to replace than using the Tamiya 9.6v batteries. Not having timecode is the only big downside I see to the unit, but for the price, I certainly wouldn't remotely expect that feature anyway.

Without even looking at the specs, I see two serious problems - first, the screen is in the wrong position for bag work (top of the device rather than the end) and it looks like the granularity of the metering is very poor (especially compared to a SD 302 or 442.) In the past, the Fostex products have been priced at the high end compared to similar products.

what audio recorder would you recommend for me then ptalsky? it'd be my first recorder, and i currently have a rode ntg-2 mic

Hard to say without knowing what your budget is. Unlimited budget, get the Cantar or the Zaxcom 5.8. :-)

More modest budget - SD 744T

Still more modest budget - SD 702T

Most modest budget - Tascam HD-P2

Least most modest budget - Marantz 671

Beyond that, I don't know - most of the recorders in the price range below the Tascam start to become more toy-like and less professional.

(BTW, I think it's Coffey Sound that has an HD-P2 for $700 in their consignment shop).

Yep, he traded in his PMD-671. I have had an HD-P2 since just after they were released, and it has been a workhorse for me. Now I mostly use it as a backup to Boom Recorder, but when I need to go with a bag, it works great.

The original Fostex FR-2 is worth a look, as well. Better control layout and a timecode option give it a lot more flexibility, although the price is higher than the LE model.

Yeah, the FR-2 looks good except for the price which unfortunately does not include the tc card. Anything near $1k just kills it for me. Now that the HD-P2 is down to $760 it's looking like the way for me to go. Good to know people are happy with it.

Zfarms Im not sure there is a real need for an independant recorder. If your using a Panasonic camera, DVX, HVX and moreso with the HPX theres not a great need to record of camera as they do a great job. Unless of course your looking at getting into being a sound guy yourself. Id concentrate the spend on a quality field mixer and pump that to camera if its for use in your own productions / production company.

My 2c.
