Well guys here is the deal I am in the market to buy a new cam I am interested in the DVX,fx1,Z1, ok here is what i need it for. I am a filmmaker until now I have mostly shot 16mm film current cameras
i have are Beaulieu R16 converted to crystal sync motor and also a Arri S non sync for high and low speed photography well I am mostly in to entering film festivals I love film but cost wise its no longer feasable for me to shoot it. so like I said I love the film look and thats the look I want on the other note these digital cameras (DVX,fx1,Z1) are a bit pricy and i dont want to buy something that will be outdated within months I want it to last me atleast 2years before moving to the next big thing. Like i said you guys here are the experts i really dont know much about digital and I wish i did at this moment if you look I even put up a outdated post lol. :-/

In short I need it to shoot short films.

Thanx in advance

:)

Re: Can someone help plz?

I will respond on what you stated above (specifically "you want to make films and am after the 'film look' and price is of concern as well)

Get the DVX100.  For the price, you will get exactly what you want.  There really isn't a question is there?  The DVX (Not any of the available cameras) will not be outdated in 2 years.  Outdated for whom?  You will still be able to produce high quailty films.  That much is true.  HD, may be the future, and may be not, isn't going to be mainstream within (2) years.

Get the DVX100.

Re: Can someone help plz?

Wait till NAB. And if nothing new comes up there, try and find a place or rent a DVX and an XL2 for a weekend and see which one fits your shooting style.

Re: Can someone help plz?

When is NAB?
Sometime in April?
oh...I can't wait....please,Panasonic, please....24P HD.....

Re: Can someone help plz?

Outdated... interesting concept. Is your Beaulieu outdated, even though it was made 30 years ago? The DVX does what you want today, and will be a perfectly serviceable tool as long as standard-def video and DVD's are viable. Sure there will be other cameras that will come along and eclipse it, just as there are other film cameras that came along and eclipsed the Arri S... but you can still shoot incredible film footage on an Arri S today and air it on television, etc...

If you can afford to wait, rumors about that JVC and Panasonic will be introducing high-def 24P cameras at NAB, two months away. However, if you want something now, it's hard to argue with the DVX, a camera that was designed from the ground up with the independent filmmaker in mind. Waiting will let you see what Panasonic and JVC introduce... and they may introduce something amazing, or they may not introduce anything at all, or they may introduce something that doesn't let you shoot better films than the DVX does. So waiting will let you be more comfortable with your purchase decision. But if you choose to get a DVX now, you'll be in some excellent company and have a great camera that makes the best film-like footage on the market at the under-$20,000 price point.

Re: Can someone help plz?

Well Berry I agree with some parts of your reply and appriciate your input I really need a lot of guidence before i purchase a digital cam, but i dont agree when you said the part about my Beaulieu R16 and the remark you made of it being outdated well its a film camera chances of it getting outdated are very limited due to the fact its not the camera making the images but instead its the film and lens but in the case of digital its all about the camera and the ccd well thanx for your input it really is helping i think i will wait for the NAB by the way how can i go to NAB and get tickets any idea? well thanx to everyone who gave their input you dont know how great you guys are. ;D ;D

Re: Can someone help plz?

Well, the point was that once you have a tool that's "good enough", does it really matter if something comes along that's better? Does that mean that your existing tool doesn't work anymore? That's all I was saying. I mean, yes, an Arri S is dated, it can't take PL mount lenses so all the new refinements in lens design will pass it by; same with the R16. But if you can make great looking footage on the R16, does it matter that there are better cameras available? I've used this example before, but I won a regional Emmy with a spot that was shot on a 1920's era Eyemo 35mm camera, using 1970's vintage still-camera lenses. It worked, and the footage was extremely usable, even if the camera was nearly 80 years old.

So all I'm saying is, if the DVX serves your needs now, and the distribution medium stays the same (DVD on SDTV), then it'll never be "outdated". Surpassed maybe, but not "outdated". And certainly should serve the purpose of making direct-to-video films for the next couple of years.
