Can someone help me with HDV and Editing?

I've been reading so much and i'm totally lost now.. or I feel that way. If anyone could help with me sort this out and help me understand I would appreciate it TONS.

I have a Sony vx2100 and have been using that for a while. I just purchased a FX1 and want to start using that. I dont think I can use my system the way it is though for editing.

I have:

P4 3.0ghz cpu
2.5 gb's ram
128mb nvidia card
2 Samsung syncMaster 710n LCD monitors ( at 1280 x 1024 res )
Premiere Pro v7.0 ( which I guess is 1.0 )

Im guessing I need to get 1.5 with a plug in OR PP 2.0 to edit HDV right? Is there any way to edit with Premiere 1.0 ( 7.0 )?

if I do that, then I can capture and edit like I've normally been doing? Through Firewire and all that?

How is downconverting to SD done and would I really need to do that? I suppose I would if going to DVD, unless I go with the HD dvd's that are coming out. Can I downconvert and use my current premiere pro 1.0 to edit with? (I hear this can be done in camera or somehow else )

Is that what most people do when they shoot in 1080i? They down convert for display on teh web? or dvds? or broacast that isn't HD?

I've seen a lot of clip that look really nice on the web using the h.264 codec or wmv v9 HD. Are those plugins for a NLE? or stand alone things like Sorenson Squeeze?

I mean, is all this gonna blow over my head and leave me like WTF am i doing? I see some people deinterlacing and converting to 24p. Is there anyway to do this with out a special program ( third party ) and by just using AE or your NLE?

Sorry for all the questions. I have been searching for 2 days and I get too much fragmented stuff. The search function is useless IMO, ; you type in HDV editing with premiere pro and you get ' the following words were either too common or too short and were excluded from your search , HDV , editing, with, pro...'' and all it searches for is Premeire. Then i have to look through 50 some pages of stuff trying to find a needle in a haystack.

I just want some direction and if anyone can help that would be great.

Thanks

Man Reflex, I was about to post the exact same question, except I am using Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 I dont know what plug-ins I need to edit HDV, and how to convert and all that. I would KILL to know these answers. Especially this one...How can I shoot something, say 1080, and then export it for the web at the size of a normal ratio? (ie, 720x480, etc) but keep the HD resolution. "Tomorrow Is Today" seemed to accomplish this because they have several smaller versions of their trailers, in all sorts of size, without having to downconvert and the works. Insight is greatly appreciated.

I have a FX1 Pal and I use premiere 2 to edit. Aparently you need Cineforms' Aspect HD to import footage. I downloaded it from their website but now the trial period is over. I'm looking for another solutions...since I don't feel like paying 400$. To export your footage in a smaller size is very easy. Just presse the settings button and you can select what format, compression, size, etc you want. But I'm still kind of learning things my self. For many many year I worked with a Matrox RT2000 video card that took cara of everything for me. Now that I jumped to HD I have to learn my way around the ropes again.

according to the Adobe site, it gives you the specs and requirements to edit HD and HDV, and it SAYS supports HDV editing, so I'd imaging you wouldn't need any 3rd party plugin to capture and everything. But lol, that's what I'm trying to figure out.

Premiere 7 does support HDV2 60i and 50i. The support was a download from Adobe back in October 2004. Try this, create a new project and look under the project templates. Do you have HDV 1080 60i? If not then go to Adobe's site and download the HDV support for Premiere 7. This is for Sony and Canon cameras working in NTSC or Pal interlaced and not for JVC progressive.

It will work and once you get the program to include HDV then you can treat the HDV just like any DV project.

good luck...

Premier Pro 1.0(aka v7) and 1.5 can't edit HDV. Version 1.5 needs a patch from adobe website that will convert this version to Premier pro 1.51. This patch will allow you to capture HDV footage via firewire. Premier Pro 2.0 will allow you to work in HDV without additional plug ins.

Hope this helps.

Teddy seems to be right, I can't find any HDV support for 7.0, only 1.5 and up. :/ noooo

mo' money, mo' money....

well the 2.0 upgrade is avail from adobe for 199 and after seeing the new features it seems pretty worth it. I have after effect 6.0 professional too, can i still use that with captured HDV clips and stuff?
