I am trying to update the firmware for my camera in regard to the e-series 32gb to work well with my hpx170 and I understand panasonic is a japanese company but DAMN!! why make this sh1t so hard & let an american design and WORD the site if your selling to americans.. What I am referring to is this ..

6. Select the item "UPDATE" on the menu and press the set button( if the update SD memory card does not insert into the unit, item "UPDATE" does not appeared.) <-- that is direct quote from panasonics pdf here ..

https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/soft/hpx170/hpx170verup_e.pdf

..regarding the firmware update!!?? Now what the hell does that mean?? are they "trying" to say that the memory card that I have is not compatible (even though after I formatted it and checked on the camera it says supported) and then it just keeps going on without giving you a troubleshooting method if that situation was to happen?? so teh question is, can you update the firmware in camera, how the hell do you do it? Please can someone speak english and explain why the hell it isnt working for me?

Thanks in advance!

It means that the "update" command will only show up, if you have an SD card in the slot that has a valid firmware update file on it, in the proper directory.

So copy the firmware update into the proper directory (in the pdf instructions) and then when you put that card in your camera, and go to MCR mode, there'll be a new option in the menus, "update".

thanks for chiming in barry but is there a way to put teh downloaded firmware into the sd card in camera? I dont have an sd reader/slot on my computer (windows pc.. i built it ) and I thought i would be able to it in cam.. any way to do it ?

by the way, you gotta agree the japanese translation of the wording is....well.

Panasonic makes great products, but you have to sorta read between the lines to get the most out of their manuals. Thankfully, there are forums like this, great pro tech support at Panny and the occasional product manager at Panny that provide the much needed clarification.

I have been going thru this since my first purchase of a WJ-MX50 mixer and AG-DS850 tape recorders in 1994. I still have a studio full of Panny F-250B's, Digital 5100 series cameras and edit controllers. I am starting to get used to it!

yeah i feel you DGW, this is only my 2nd panasonic purchase (dvx100b was my 1st) but I was really amazed that calling tech support for the hpx170 they had no one to answer questions?? they make you leave your number to have a tech call you back.. now, if someone spends 5 grand on a camera it would be nice to have tech support to talk to when you want it, not when they decide to call you back..thought that was kinda ridiculous ..

anyways, thanks barry, I was thinking I could connect the camera usb and have the firmware updated that way but I guess I'm going to have to now purchase an sd reader just to updatre firmware.. kinda goofy also but I guess when pany makes good products, we are at there mercy and have to do things there way instead of an easy and more convient way..
