FS5: Can someone explain the benefits of shooting in the new HLG HDR?

Hello,

With the new Hybrid Log Gamma, High Dynamic Range firmware for the Sony FS5 – does that mean you would be able to shoot in this mode and have it look like properly graded SLOG2/3 with the extended dynamic range of 14 stops?

Essentially bypassing the required colour grading stage with SLOG, so footage doesn’t look flat? Thus, saving time.

Or does it mean something else entirely?

I am just trying to clearly understand what the benefits are to the image quality, since I am a little unclear.

Thanks!

In order for any HDR format to look properly graded, you will need an HDR monitor. If you're displaying on a REC709 monitor, you'll need to grade for REC709. Trying to display HDR footage on a REC709 monitor, it will always look flat. Furthermore, simply recording in HLG will not be adequate for proper display on a REC2020 monitor. Your entire pipeline, from injest to edit to delivery, will need to be consistent with HLG/REC2020. But, if you don't have an HDR monitor, why even spend time on an HLG workflow?

My understanding is the Hybrid Log Gama is a new TV broadcast standard jointly developed by the BBC and Japanese state broadcaster NHK, that enables regular TV playback and HDR playback from the same signal. Currently non-broadcast HDR systems use meta-data to flag how the signal should be displayed, but this does not work reliably for broadcast TV, so the HLG HDR system was created specifically to handle this.

The GH5 is getting HLG this summer via a firmware update, so I will be curious to figure how to shoot with this format. ( I will have to buy a new HDR TV to go with a new Atomos Ninja Inferno so I can actually see what I'm shooting in HDR mode )
