Can Someone Confirm I'm Setting Both the GH1 and HVX200 To The Same Record Settings?

I have a shoot tomorrow. We're using an HVX200 and a GH1. The final product is destined for DVD and, perhaps, Blu-Ray. We want film-look, not the live showscan.

I'd like to make sure I'm setting the cameras to the proper modes. If I want to shoot 1080 then I'd do the following?

GH1
Shoot in FHD then use the Compressor GH1 conversion workflow to render 23.98fps

HVX200
Shoot 1080i24p

If I want to film in 720 then I'd try this:

GH1
Shoot in SHD then use the Compressor GH1 conversion workflow ot render 23.98fps

HVX200
Shoot 720p24PN

Is that correct? Any advantage going 1080p vs 720p? Should I just conserve hard drive space?

Hello
- If you haven't hack your GH1 forget about 1080 ; it is awfully bad ; 720 is much better with a regular GH1
- I did shoot with both in PAL and I used :
--- HVX 1080i DVCPRO HD ( very good format )
--- GH1 1080i (or 720p50 for slow motion) and import into Final Cut Pro in Apple ProRes 422
--- Work in Final Cut Pro in DVCPRO HD 1080i setting

I guess the best thing would have been to convert directly the MTS in DVCPRO HD 1080
The upscaling in FCP works for the 720p50 footage.

If you do not need Full HD i think you would have a better image in 720p with both your camera : the HVX small captor (sensor) only records 960x540 ( YUV )
pix and the GH1 compression is better in 720p

Forget about disk space problem ! Think only image quality !

Good luck !

I disagree with most of this. First of all 1080/24p on unhacked Gh1 is not "awfully bad" The codec doesn't hold up quite as well as the 720p mode when it comes to fast movement but generally looks better I've found.

Secondly, I'd convert the HVX and GH1 footage to ProRes and edit in a ProRes timeline.

Not sure what you're talking about with the HVX and 960 x 540...in 720p mode it shoots 960 x 720 with squished pixels....Anyway, I would shoot

So anyway, OP, yes those settings sound right to me...I'd double check the 1080 setting on the HVX to be sure you're getting native 24p...I haven't shot on one in a year or so sorry I'm not more help.

I don't use these programs so I'm just checking here -- this would result in stripping out the pulldown to create a 23.976p file, instead of the natively-recorded 24p-within-60i, correct?

If so...
HVX200
Shoot 1080i24p
Definitely not. Use 1080i/24pA. That way Final Cut (I presume you're using Final Cut) will strip out the pulldown automatically.

If you've already shot (hey, I've been on a plane for 12 hours, so forgive me for being late!) then you can still rectify it by using Cinema Tools to strip out the pulldown.

Thanks for all the responses. I double-posted this in another forum where someone reminded me to add the 'a' to the HVX200's 1080p24pa. It was a great catch as I decided to make this project 1080p at the very last minute. So with the HVX200 at 1080p24pa I set the GH1 to FHD (1080 at 29.97) and removed the pulldown with Apple Compressor. It worked out and the footage looks great.

I guess we could discuss the merits (or lack there of) of converting the HVX200's DVCPro HD files to Apple ProRes to match the GH1 footage. Right now, I'm mixing both formats in a DVCPro HD timeline. It doesn't need to render so I haven't messed with it.
