Hey guys, so im planning to buy a DXV100B. All i wanted to know is can I upload videos to my laptop? Cause i went to visit the guy that's selling the camera and I noticed theres a DV input. I also brought the wire that i used to use to upload with my old sony camcorder and it fit perfectly. so, am i ready to upload once I buy the camera ?

Thanks.

I would recommend still using the "old" sony camcorder to transfer the video onto your laptop (just take the recorded tape out of your dvx and plop it in the sony). This will keep the hours down on the DVX heads. A lot of us DVX folk never actually use the playback feature on the camera for this reason. And yep, as long as you have enough space on your laptop, editing software, preferably a firewire connection you should be fine to go.

I do have a older sony camcorder i could use to upload but the heads are dirty and i've been trying to find a cleaning cassette ever since. But the wire i'm refering to is from a newer sony camcorder that uses memory cards instead of tapes. So you're saying i need firewire ?

No. Uploading means to transfer from a local computer to a remote computer.

But, if your Laptop has a FireWire port, then you can capture the footage from the camera.

Yeah sorry when you mentioned your old sony camera I assumed you meant it was a tape based player... As Jim says, firewire, firewire, firewire. It's a little more laborious to transfer tape but as far as I'm concerned it's a plus because it gives you a chance to become familiar with the footage you've captured before you start editing! It might be worth getting a cheap mini DV camcorder of ebay as well for log and capture.

Don't buy the camera until you make sure you have a way to connect it via firewire to your laptop. Laptops with built-in firewire ports are rare. And many laptops today don't even have card slots for adding a firewire connection. If your laptop doesn't have a firewire port or a card slot, you have no way to connect the camera to it and capture.

If you DO have a firewire port, then before you buy the camera you should try connecting it to your laptop and doing a capture. You'd be surprised how many DVX's turn out to have blown firewire ports.

Good luck!

Ok , I got a HP laptop right now, its pretty new i got it a year ago ( last august ). so your saying theres a rare chance that my laptop could get a firewire port added? would you know by any chance if its possible to take out a existing port and place a firewire?

Thanks.

What I'm saying is that if your laptop doesn't already have a firewire port built into it, then the only way I know of to add such a port would be through a PCMCIA card slot or something similar.
