can I shut off the time-code display?

The time code display takes up a lot of space on the LCD screen and bothers me when trying to compose shots. Can it be turned off and on? I really don't need to see time-code running, the red "rec" word is enough for me.

Thank you tech gurus for looking into this for me.

Re: can I shut off the time-code display?

Iamloser, can you please explain why a time-code break is important? Do you mean that while I'm recording a shot the time-code can actually "break"? Or does this occur just between shots? And how likely is this to happen? :-/I haven't seen any posts complaining about time-code "breaks." Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like I should be able to play back a tape in the camera and visibly see if there is any time-code break.

Re: can I shut off the time-code display?

time code break would occur between shots.

its likely enough to happen if you review your shots, or shut the camera off between shots, or the camera goes into standby, or you have to change a battery.
theres planety of timecode break issues that have been brought up. the camera often shuttles the tape a little hair during these things, and causes the cam to lose the timecode track.

it would be nice to be able to see all timecode breaks visibly soley by watching the video playback, but such is not always the case. the camera will play the tape back fine regrdless of when the timecode is doing. the takes could even seemingly be back to back, but still have breaks. sadly enough, alot of people only find this out when they go to captrue, and its their worst nightmare because of all the breaks.

with the timecode displayed .. you can visibly see the timecode to make sure its displayed, and reading the right #. if theres a break it will go to all 0's like the beginning of a tape, and you can see it, and rewind a little to before the break . most of the time this can be done by just holding the menu joystick in the rewind position for one sec when the cam is STILL IN CAMERA MODE. this will cause the tape to shuttle backwards a teeny tiny bit, and it will usually pick up the timecode from where it was last left off. hitting the record check button should also put you back at the end of the timecode as well after reviewing the last couple secs of the previous take. but theres no way to know for sure without being able to actually see what the timecode is reading.

I still can't shut off the time-code

I still can't shut off the time-code

I went to page 57 of the manual, as Iamloser suggested. I went to the "other display" setup in the "display setup" I tried all, partial and none in the "other display." I get time-code displayed no matter what setting I choose. :-[

why is time-code break bad during capture?

why is time-code break bad during capture?

Thanks Iamloser for your help. I'm really not an editor, so can you tell my why, if the camera plays back fine with time-code breaks, such breaks are a problem during capture? I plan to record sound directly into my camera, so I don't have to use the time-code to sync up any sound recorded on a dat recorder. Just guessing, but is correct time-code essential for non-linear editing? The people with "nightmare" time-code problems, can they still edit their tapes?

Here's another question. If I really need to see the time-code, can I move it to another part of the screen? I'd rather have it on the lower part of the display. But I doubt if this is possible with this camera.

Re: can I shut off the time-code display?

you can still capture with timcode breaks, but its not fun. the NLE will likely stop captureing and give you an error with every break it encoounters, so you have to manually capture around each break.

no you cannot movethe display

Just hit the Counter button until it dissapears. It's that simple! =)

Re: can I shut off the time-code display?

You don't control the timecode display with that setting, you do it by pressing the "counter" button inside the LCD panel.

And be aware: the REC light comes on when you press the button, but you MAY NOT ACTUALLY BE RECORDING YET. Sometimes it'll take a few seconds for the tape transport to get powered up and for the timecode counter to actually start moving. I've seen delays as long as five seconds. So make sure you give your shot plenty of lead time or you may clip off the front of it, especially if you don't have the timecode confirmation that it's actually recording.
