Can I mix DVX 4:3 with HVX 16:9?

I've been working on a documentary for a few years and shot about 80 hours with my DVX, but I shot it 4:3.

I recently upgraded to HVX and want to shoot the rest in HD 16:9.

I'm hoping to send the doc to festivals and eventually get the documentary broadcast on TV, and dream of a theatrical release.

Is there a way for me to finish the doc shooting HD 16:9 on my HVX and still use the DVX 4:3 footage without blowing it up so that it looks super pixelated?

And so that everything is widescreen? In other words, is there a way for the 4:3 DVX footage to be converted to 16:9?

You can convert the DVX footage to 16:9. Just crop it manually, which achieves pretty much the same thing as shooting squeeze.

However, you may be better off down-rezzing your HVX footage to SD and editing in an SD project.

thanks.

If I crop it manually though, wont it just be the equivalent of letterbox and not true 16:9-- so when combined in a timeline with 16:9 HD footage it will be cropped on the sides too?

If I edit in an sd project, can I uprezz back to HD to master it? Will the mix of DV and HD footage look ok together?

If you take 4:3 footage into a 16:9 time line, you can enlarge it to fill the frame and avoid letterbox/pillarbox. This also gives you better framing control, since you can move the center point up or down to compensate for headroom, etc.

It will be difficult to go back to HD, mostly because the HD footage will take a second conversion hit. You can try and convert the SD footage to HD, but results may vary and it's not going to look as good. For consitency's sake, taking your HD footage down to SD is a better bet.

if you drop a 4:3 clip into a 4:3 timeline then press (command, 0) then click anamorphic 16:9 and now copy that 4:3 clip that is now 16:9 and paste into your main timeline that you are working out of

oh but unless you are shooting 420p with the HVX the video is still going to look way off but at least every thing will be 16:9
