Can I make a DVD from the DV tape w/ FULL quality?

My question is how to make a dvd with all the detail and quality from the dv tape. When Im editing on the computer it looks very detailed, but after I burn it and watch it on the tv screen its not as detailed. There must be a way to get the details from the original footage straight to the dvd- I see massive detail on other movies from dvds, and the original footage when its on my computer has alot of detail- but again, when its burned to dvd and shown on the tv its not as detailed.

How do I get the FULL quality?

thanks

kbar,
Unfortunately you can't get "FULL dv quality" as there is not nearly enough space on a DVD. For example a 60 minute dv file may be 36 gig or so, and you're trying to get it to fit on a 4.7 (actually less than that) disk. So "full quality" isnt going to happen.
However...You can get really close depending on how you encode the mpeg2. Personally I use the adobe main concept encoder with the following settings....2 pass variable bitrate max bitrate of 7mbps min 4 mbps and an average bitrate of 6mbps. These settings have been amazing for me! Basicaly it comes down to how you encode your video. Whatever you do, don't let programs like encore, dvdit, or anything else "automatically encode" your footage. It will turn out bad.. very blocky, no detail, etc..

What your saying makes complete sense, but...

how do movies on dvd look great and detailed and stuff?

Also, how do the programs you see on tv look incredibly detailed?

thanks,

If you encode the right way, the difference in your original and the DVD version can be almost imperceptible.

The reason you are seeing so much detail in some of the dramatic programs on TV is because a lot of them have been shot on 35mm film and then telecined to tape, maintaining a lot of the rich detail.

The reality shows you see on TV are usually shot with DV cameras and they are a better comparison of what you can do.

If you use the right program with the right settings, your DVD will look extremely close to, if not exactly like, your original DV source.

If you're not getting the detail you expect, then look at the DVD authoring software. There's something wrong with how you're making the DVD's.

Im exporting to dvd straight from Premiere Pro 1.5 - I have DVD encore.

Again though, how do the movies on dvd have great detail?

They still have to use the 4.7GB size as well.

Well actually, most DVDs are dual layered - meaning they get about double the storage spacewhat we do on a single disc - but regardless, if your DVD is encoded properly, it'll look very similar to the original source.

As has been said, Hollywood movies are starting from a source that is considerably higher resolution, colour depth, etc - and most likely encode their DVD from a 4:2:2, or maybe even 4:4:4 digital downsample of their 35mm original. With DV, we're STARTING with 4:1:1, and standard definition resolution...

I think you need to ask some Premiere Pro users. When using Vegas software, I can make DVD's that look extremely like the original DV footage. If you're not getting satisfactory results, I suspect it's Encore that's doing it, and you need to find out what to do differently. I'm sure the program has to be capable of delivering great results, you just need to consult with some Adobe guru's who can guide you to the right process.

I use Premiere Pro 1.5 and Encore DVD and get very good results. Like Vince, I do the encoding in Premiere and I get very good results. If I'm pressed for space on the DVD, I'll use the same two-pass, VBR settings that Vince does. Otherwise I'll use the single-pass CBR 7mbps preset. Both look as good as the source material to me.

In your opinion, which are the right programs and thye right settings?
I use tmpeg to encode (like it/ better than canopus which i used to work with); then Encore to record.
I will like to try other settings and programs to see better results. Anyway, with these two, the results are not bad at all

In tmpeg (normally 2 pass/and the bitrate obviously depends on the duration....)
By the way if someone else works with tmpeg, What the frame I and Gop´s are for? I never touch those settings because of my ignorance about it... Are they good for anything? Should i leave them untouch?

TeleDan,
Your advice was perfect! Im looking at the footage now, and it looks Beautiful! Thanks again!

Let me ask you all, whats best for audio-
mpeg, pcm, or dolby?

And one other question- I made the dvd in 16x9, then made the dvd encoding for 16x9, and when I played it on one of my dvd players it cropped off the sides and used its maximum height (thus making it look like a 4x3), but my other dvd player played it widescreen.

Do most DVD players automatically make it widescreen or do most just zoom in an crop the sides to fill the screen?

Glad it's working for you!

DVD players have a menu setting that controls how they display footage. They usually have three options, one for playing fullscreen, one for letterboxing video, and one for zooming-in. Check the menu setup in your DVD player.

My recommendation is always the same: Vegas. I use Vegas to encode the files, and DVD Architect 2.0b to make the DVD's. With that combination you can do practically anything the DVD spec allows.

Sounds like you guys are finding a happy solution with Encore as well, which is good to hear.

...for Mac users,

Final Cut Pro 4.5 and Compressor work really great. ;)
