Can I export 1080P via SDI

Hi folks,

I've got an AF101 and so far have been recording 1080P 25fps internally to SDcards.

I've recently purchased an Atomos Samurai external HDSDI recorder but I noticed in one of the SDI camera options recently: 1080i/720p suggesting I had to choose between the two when exporting images via SDI.

Does this mean I can't actually export a full 1080p via SDI on the AF100?

This would kinda go against the whole point of getting the external recorder, the hope was to get better quality full res images,

any insight much appreciated,

Grant :)

Thats my understanding too, your Samurai has the brains (dedicated hardware) to rebuild a full p stream from the incoming i stream with no loss of quality, hey report back on the Samurai, what are the focus assist and exposure assist functions like...I think the ninja recorded a i stream but your NLE could rebuilt it . In the world of Apple Cinetools could do this ..

someone can correct me if I'm wrong but i think if you select 24fps and turn psf on the sdi will output 1080p at 24fps.

With the KiProMini and AF100 I can report the KPM recording over SDI goes like this at 1080. 24p can be recorded at 24p or 24p with a 60i wrapper. 30p is recorded at 30i/ie: 60i. 25p is recorded at 50i. While Im no pro at post production, 30i and 50i material from your KPM can be brought in to your NLE and exported de-interlaced to 30p and 25p. The same can be done in Adobe Media Encoder.

The Abel Cine blog has a simple tutorial for removing pull down from 24p/60i material in Compressor.

Thanks guys, this gives me more hope :) I'm still waiting on media being delivered for Samurai but I'll do some tests when I'm all setup and report back on the Samurai too,

Dont overlook that you will be recording to a 10bit 4:2:2 file instead of 8 bit 4:2:0

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, but I believe it's on topic :)
I'm planning on using the Sound Devices PIX240 recorder and AF101 to record 1080 25p.
I can see from the AF101 menu that there is no 25psf option. And from what I understand in this post, the 1080 50i signal from AF101 actually is 25p in a 50i wrapper?

The Pix 240 can be set to both 1080 25p and 1080 25 psf. Would just setting it to 25p be correct? And the resulting frames be true progressive?

Thanks!

That wright, I have the same problem over here , I record with my AF101 to black magic shuttle and in the timeline specifications say it's 1080-50i wile I recorded 1080-25p ? I must do say that it does look like 1080-25p
anyway it seems like the Panasonic AF101 doest have 25 Psf, so what exactly happens then?if thats the case then this sucks. The recorded item properties shows this;

Duration : 32 sec, Format 1920x1080 , 4,0 Gig , Vid rate 25 fps , Data rate 134,0 MB/sec , Compressor : Uncompressed 10bit 4.2.2, Field dominance: Upper (Odd)

However I don't see a lot of difference in colors when I record footage with the standard codec? does anyone know how I can make a decent test to notice the difference
course I wonder if it is worth to shoot uncompressed. I tought I would have at least a more colorful pallet or does this have nothing to do with it?
and why does my uncompressed format shows the ( Upper Od field in the specifications ?) does anyone know more about this?

Does anyone know why the AF101 doesn't have the Psf select option anyway's? , mayby something to ask Jan.

Hey guy's , figure that out! According to the specifications the AF101 PAL 50Hz version as mine pushes out trough the SDI only 1080-50i and 720-50i , so NO ' Psf ' at all , so the Black Magic shuttle only records what it sees wright? so guess what!
I record 1080-25p setting on the camera and set the SDI output to 1080-50i course i have no other option wright !.

After recording I open the recorded files on the shuttle and the footage is indeed 25 p ???? witch is a good thing of course, but what the heck is all that Psf wrapper then all about if you don't need it ???
this thing is driving me crazy??

Hi Katty

If you switch your camera to american mode (59.9 HZ) then PsF will become available, PsF was a kind of cheat or modification to allow progressive video to be carried as interlaced video on equipment that was designed to work with interlaced video only.
The progressive frame is split into two fields. just as interlace - but were it differs - interlace scans each field one after the other so there is a time difference between the two, with PsF there is no time difference between the two fields, they are gathered off the one frame.

Agree why PsF, I understand the AF101 shoots true progressive of the sensor and to build an SDI output it converts each frame to 2 interlaced fields (with no time delay between fields) but your shuttle knows this and can rebuild the frame with no loss, PsF would be useful if you needed to throw the signal down some transmission equipment specced to interlace only.

Thanks Vultch, I just figured it out yesterday to, thx for the advice. Yes it must be the Shuttle detects the signal and ensemble it back as Progressive anyways. But its great to know I have the option now to use the Psf and I can even shoot now 60 frames slow mo to intend of 50 frames if am correct.
Its strange the manual doesn't tell anything about the 60 hz mode and the use of Psf option, anyway am glad i have this option now and gone shoot some tests tomorrow,

greets Katty
