Can I do this legaly?

Current situation:
MC3.0 on an old Centrino dual Dell lappie, that used to have a Nvida card, but is now ATI (Ouch).

Target situation:
MC5.0 on a i7 950 build with Nvidia Fx580 graphics. With dongle.

If I have a dongled system then by definition, I can only run one license at a time (And am happy to do so), therefore could I install my MC3.0 from disk onto my new build and upgrade that? Or do I have to kill the installation on my old computer? Or even worse do I have to purchase a whole new license?

If I have to purchase a new license then I'll have to jump ship (Probably to Sony Vegas) as there is no way I could afford a new MC license, I'm merely a keen hobbyist who only ended up with MC because Avid kept EOL-ing XDV then Xpro, so I've sort of been pushed up the beach by the rising tide.

If I do manage to upgrade to MC5 it will probably be the last upgrade I'll be able to afford for a long time unless / until there's a radical change in video format / editing philosophy (r3d files are out since Scarlet moved out of my league :().

MODS; Please don't kill this until someone's come back with an authoritative answer.

I do not have an authoritative answer to your question. However, if you want an authoritative answer, why not contact Avid? You're a currently licensed user, they should be able to answer this in a few moments. Alternatively, ask the question on Avid's excellent forums. I am sure you'll have an answer in a matter of minutes.
 
I might do that, been too chicken up to now. I am registered on the Avid forums, same user name.

You can install MC 3.x on your new PC. Or you can upgrade it to 5.x and either blast your dongle or deactivate your dongle and go with web licensing (I suggest you keep the dongle) . I believe the upgrade cost is now $695. If you upgrade then just install MC 5. You don't install 3 first - you'll just have to uninstall it before you install 5 anyhow.

With Avid you can install the software on as many computers as you want so you don't have to uninstall it from your laptop either. The software just wont run until you plug in your dongle.
 
I am doing this. I upgraded my dongle then reinstalled and did web authorization. Dongle on Old machine functions on MC5 and Web authorized new laptop runs MC 5

You know you can de authorize as needed. If you have Desktop and you want to take work home for the weekend. Deauth the desktop and authorize the laptop. Then switch again on Monday when your back at the office.


But I did get web auth and dongle both working.
 
Well, I've been an' gorn an' dunnit now aint I?!
Forked out more than I can reasonably justify on an upgrade pack. That noise you can hear in the background is me kicking myself HARD for not springing in June / July before the price rises. Aargh!
Only consolation is that by going through a reseller I got it for a heck of a lot less than the Avid Store was charging.

i have the non dongle version. All I do when I wanna use avid on my laptop is deactivate it. i then reactivate it on the laptop i would think the dongle only version removing the dongle would deactivate it it allowing you to reactivate on another computer.
 
I use a dongle protected dedicated pro AV engineering CAD program. I can load the program with the dongle installed and authorize it on multiple systems, but it will only run on the machine with the dongle installed. That satisfies the licensing requirement.
