Can HVX200 record HD to HD tape?

I work in commercial production and I am trying to convince my boss to consider buying the HVX200. The only problem we may have is we are currently using Media 100 844X and it doesn't support P2 technology. If we were able to record to HD tape that would be a big plus. I noticed on the Panasonic site it says you can record to dv tape but I didn't know if that meant mini dv tape or if any DVC Pro tape would work. We currently shoot DVC Pro 25 and are looking to upgrade. Any thoughts? Also, if we were to record to Firestore drives could we just record HD or DVC Pro 50 and transfer it over via firewire? Thanks for any help you can give.

Welcome to DVXUser.com Jon

The short answer is No. It only records Standard Definition (SD) MiniDV format to MiniDV tape. HD needs P2, or third party external recording solutions which will probably be available shortly after the HVX200 is released.

This has already been asked and answered many many times on this site. For more detail please do a search, or browse of the HVX topic:

Ah, thanks for the help. I'm checking up on the Firestore FS-4 right now and it has yet to be listed to support the HVX200. Hopefully this will soon change. Thanks again for the help.

The FS-4 is not the product you want, the new HVX-compatible product is called something like the FS-100 (I don't think that's accurate, but it's something like that).

You'd also want to check and see if your Media 100 system can handle DVCPRO-HD footage. If not, you may have more compatibility issues than just whether it can handle P2 or not. For P2 support, your system needs to either understand .MXF files (using Op-Atom) or use the FireStore file conversion utility to convert the .MXF files into something that's compatible with the Media 100.
