Hey Gang, I am new here. Can the HVX-200A send a live video stream via firewire, but be seen by the Mac/PC as a video camera device? I thought it would be cool to try it with Skype for shoots.

I can get the camera recognized when it's in the 1394 connect mode, but don't know how in live mode.

I am pretty sure it's possible because I've used one briefly as a surveillance camera hooked up to a mac through FW. I believe it had to be in DV mode though. Not sure.

Yes, you can get a live feed from the camera -- it's the basis for programs like OnLocation, Scopebox, and other live capture apps. You can also get a live feed in the capture programs of most NLEs.

Whether or not it will work with Skype is another question -- not sure that it will. I think you have to use a USB webcam with it. That, you can't do with the HVX.
