Can files from a formatted SD card be recovered?

I formatted the SD card in my wife's GX8 camera, and it turns out that she still needs photos that were on it. Is there any way to recover any of the files? Does anyone have a good experience with file recovery software?

If you haven't used the card since it was formatted you have a good chance of recovery. There's a lot of software out there. Many will allow you to download and run a scan to show what they see before you buy.

I ended up getting software called AnyRecover, and it was able to get some of the files off the formatted SD card. Not enough to make my wife happy, but something. It is reasonably easy to use, but not cheap: It's $50 for a month (although it is $60 for a year!) and it is set up so that the default is a monthly subscription at $50 per month. I had to go in and figure out how to tell it to cancel my subscription, which I was able to do.

I had a bunch SanDisk recovery licenses they included for free with their flash drives I could have given you.
 
It is worth trying more than one recovery program as they can have different results
 
Just to close the loop on this, I ran two different recovery applications: One that I purchased for $50 called AnyRecover, and the SanDisk app that Peter suggested. Of the two, the SanDisk app was FAR better, finding thousands of usable files... including all (I think) of my wife's files that I deleted. I don't know what you'd have to pay for a SanDisk product to get a copy of the SanDisk recovery app, but it is definitely worth it.

Glad to be of help. I buy hundreds of SanDisk Ultra usb flash drives to deliver theatrical performances. For many years I tossed the packing that included a little slip of paper with a free license of their recovery software. I usually assume anything to be free to be a waste of time but I was happily proven wrong.
