looking at buying fcp 6.0 from a friend... wondering if i do so, can i just pay for the upgrade to 7??? it is the academic version and i think, if i remember correctly, the academic versions cannot be upgraded?

I'd check with Apple but last time I heard it was not upgradeable. Also your friend should not be selling an academic version to you- could be a license violation.

really... we certainly did not know that... so academic versions can't be resold... does ebay know this?

The answer is most certainly no. You cannot upgrade an academic version of FCP. I've already been down that road, before purchasing the 'real' version. And Ebay doesn't care. You have to prove to Apple you are a member of school in good standing.

No upgrades for academic versions.

As to selling them, the purchaser must qualify under the academic/educational guidelines.

I got pretty lucky years back. I was originally working with an academic version. When Apple switched to the universal binary you were able to mail in your PowerPC disks for the universal disks. So the disks I got back were for a retail version.

Speaking of which, my friend's sister apparently bought an ipod from the apple store and when she got home there was randomly a copy of FCS in the bag, and that's how he has FCS now.
