Can DVX or Xl2 pick up blank firing gun shots?
can you see the actual flash when the fire is released?
if yes, how well?

Thanks a lot

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

Let's see....

voices, dogs, birds, music, cars, cats, face slap, laughter, running water, dice, wind, cash register, smacking lips, sneeze, cough, fart, rain, explosion, fireworks, siren, fire, scream.....

The odds are in your favor.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

Hi pookie,

I take it you are talking about a shotgun mike, right?

What he wants to know is if the DVX captures the flash from a firearm when it is fired.

I don't have much experience with this stuff, but I don't see why it shouldn't.

Maybe someone with experience in this area would be able to explain.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

I haven't tried it either, but I don't see why it shouldn't. You'd want as many frames per second as possible though, so 24P might not be your best choice.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

Just remember that a blank gun wont have a flash coming out of the barrel. It will come out around the hammer.

Excellent point -- if shooting 24P with 1/48 shutter, the camera will be "blind" 50% of the time. So you may want to shoot 60i, or set your 24P shutter to 1/24 to make sure that the camera "sees" the muzzle shot.

Or just add it in post using AlamDV.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

Actually, there are more than 1 type of blanks available. Muzzle flash are the ones you'll want.

They will be available at your supplier.

Also, to be a tiny bit more specific, that's a different type of blank gun, not a different type of blank. Just so no one goes looking for a different load of blank.

You want an unplugged barrel blank gun, which is dangerous and potentially illegal in your municipality depending on local laws. Be careful.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

I think Brandon Lee was killed by an actrual shotgun blast. But, there was this one actor who pretended to play Russian Roulette with a blank gun and accidently killed himself.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

Contrary to popular belief, Brandon Lee was killed by a ancient chinese curse.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

J_Barnes, one assumes that the person wanting to fire blanks has the required licences for the equipment to be used, hence, "your local supplier" won't sell to a walkin off the street. Your point regarding a "unplugged barrel blank gun" is moot.
I rather suspect our friend is referring to a starters pistol, as one with experience in firing "blanks", wouldn't be asking if a "DVX or Xl2 [can] pick up blank firing gun shots".

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

I just meant to clarify that the differences lie in the gun, not in the actual blank.

I've rented unplugged muzzle blank guns several times in the past with no licensing (both in new york city and in florida), so it really depends on your local and state laws as to how available that type of weapon will be to the average joe. I'd imagine that most local and state governments would be tightening those regulations if they haven't already.

As far as your assumptions about the original question, they're valid, but there are a host of conditions that determine if your flash will register on camera...so I would say it's not strictly a beginner's question, thus he might not be referring to the ubiquitous starters pistol.

If you meant something else in your post, then pardon my confusion.

Freddie Prinz?

Or even Terry Kath from the band Chicago....maybe...if 30 year old memories are anywhere near correct.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

Really the best reason to use a blank firing gun is for the way it handles in an actors hands. It's hard to fake a gunshot even when you have shot many times before. The effects can easily be done in post and will give you the most freedom. I wouldn't worry about it all that much.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

Hi friends;
Yes! you can see the flash and smoke. Of course pay attention to all the cin. rules and the camera will do all the rest at 60i.
If the blanks are fired out of a REAL FIREARM, the flash comes out of the barrel. (the thing you want). Fake firearms should scare the crap out of you! Local gunfighters are usually excited to tell cameramen details. I suggest finding them and doing some test. After all, it is about test.

Re: can dvx pick up gun shots?

Whenever I see trailers for films, even darn good ones, the gunshots almost ALWAYS look fake. Why is that? Even on that trailer "the Feeding" that is up on the screen grabls/clips thread has a handgun and a shotgun blast both of which look fake to me. Aside from that, the trailers looks pretty flawless. Are these the result of adding in post?
