Can DVCPRO HD write directly to a 5400rpm drive?

Please forgive the simple question...

Can DVCPRO HD be written directly to a 5400rpm drive or would I need to upgrade my laptop to a 7200rpm drive.

Thanks,

Russell

It's not the rpms that matter, it's the throughput. If your drive can sustain a minimum transfer rate of 15 megabytes per second (or 7 megabytes per second for 720/24p) then it should work fine.

Ah, right...do you have any good ideas on how I can benchmark a Powerbook's throughput with a 5400rpm drive?

*Edit* Xbench 1.2 returns a sequential write average of 22MB/sec on my Powerbook. The random write average is a terrible 5MB/sec. Seems like it would be okay as long as the drive isn't fragmented...

Thanks so much,

Russell

Probably not a good idea to record straight to the OS drive anyway. You'd be better off going to an external firewire drive.

I completly agree and would, but 12in Powerbooks only have a single firewire port on them so I can't attach an external drive and an HXV200, unless I purchased a USB 2.0 drive...I haven't seen any that are bus powered. I don't REALLY want to be tethered to a computer though. I am just considering the option...

I have 2 laptops (HP's , one year old and 6 mos. old) They have the same hard drive in it. The older can capture to the System drive and the newer one can not. Point is that this is only DV I doubt it will even ome close to capturing from the HVX200 on the system drive.. I usually use an external; USB2 and never have a problem. I would like to upgrade the Latop drive to a 7200 just for the heck of it and see what happens.

Good information...I do have a creeping suspicion that it won't be able to sustain the throughput. No it doesn't have a PCMCIA slot. Sounds like I just need to upgrade to a 15in Powerbook with a PCMCIA slot and 7200rpm drive.

You could daisy-chain the camera to the external hard-drive to the computer.

And there are USB2 drive cases that are bus powered, but only for the smaller 2.5in drives.
