Can avid and Premiere co-exist on same PC?

Hey guys,

I've been using Premiere Pro 1.5 for a long time now, but I'm wanting to purchase and teach myself Avid.

About two years ago I downloaded a trial version of Avid Xpress and installed it on my windows 2000 machine. Unfortuantly it could not co-exist with Premiere on the same machine. (Something to do with different firewire drivers)...

Is this still an issue with the newer versions? Anyone running Avid and Premiere Pro 1.5 on the same machine? I'm running Windows XP Pro now.

Thanks!

Re: Can avid and Premiere co-exist on same PC?

I personally am not, but I know a lot of people who are running Avid and PPro on the same machine. It shouldn't be a problem.

Please, don't judge Avid on the free version. Free DV simply does not do Avid software justice. :)

Chris.

Re: Can avid and Premiere co-exist on same PC?

Thanks. Yeah, i'm not judging it on the free version. I intend to purchase the full version once I get paid for my gig at the end of the month.

I just wanted to make sure that It would work, because I'm sure I will still be using premiere until I totally get the hang of avid.

I'm confused about the different versions of avid, is this correct:

Xpress DV is only for editing DV

Xpress Pro HD includes HD support

so what does just Plain Xpress Pro offer that's more than what you get with Xpress DV.

(I'm trying to decide which version I will buy).

I'm only going to be editing DV for now, but HD support would be good to have for the future.

Re: Can avid and Premiere co-exist on same PC?

wait, can Xpress DV not handle 24p? and Xpress Pro can? I think I'm getting this.

Also, are .avi video files captured with premiere pro importable into avid or not?

thanks

Re: Can avid and Premiere co-exist on same PC?

Correct. Xpress Pro can handle 24p Advance footage. Xpress DV cannot.

There are a ton of other features that Xpress Pro has that DV does not. Go to Avid's Website and look at the FAQ under Xpress DV it will talk a lot about the differences. It sounds like you'll be wanting Pro based on the info you've given. Also, the upgrade from Xpress Pro to Xpress Pro HD is only $50, and I'd definitely recommend it. With Xpress Pro HD you can edit many flavors of HD, you can capture DV50 and DVCPro 100 over firewire, etc. All in all a frantastic upgrade for $50.

Avi files are not compatible with Avid. You can, however convert them to QT using a lossless codec and import those into Avid.

Coming from PPro you'll have a little bit of a learning curve, but I think you'll be impressed with the power of Avid. If you take the time to really learn it then I'm sure it will become the mainstay and you'll only open PPro if you need to edit an AVI natively.

Once you get Avid up and running if you have any questions, feel free to post. There are a lot of very helpful people on this forum.

Is that really true??? I find that hard to believe for an "industry-standard" NLE. I have never used it and I don't really have any plans to, but I was just curious.

Re: Can avid and Premiere co-exist on same PC?

Just don't try to import one over 2GB. ;)

Avid was built on Quicktime and that's what it prefers.

Ah. That explains it (still, by this time you'd think they would realize where the world has gone...)

I used to agree with that. When I first started using Avid I was surprised and a bit upset that better AVI support was not built into the software, but as I've worked in post production I have come to learn that AVI isn't all that great. It's less uniform than Quicktime. You can have approx. 16 million different codecs in an AVI file (adjust for inflation) which can cause real headaches. Quicktime, though it can still hold different codecs, is much more controlled and universal. Plus, when working with other editors I've never had anyone say "Can you send me an AVI of that?" It's always a QT, or an OMF, or even just an EDL.

For what it's worth.

Re: Can avid and Premiere co-exist on same PC?

Avid was never built on Quicktime. Thge 2Gb limit was imposed by older operating systems that could not deal with files bigger that that. OSX and XP no longer have this restriction but the need to be aware of file linits cannot be ignored becuase of legacy systems. It will take a while for the entire transition to take place.

No problem, Avid was released before QUickTime exisited. We made our own software encoding that at the time was called 4 bit and 8 bit. In version 3 we went to JPEG compression inside of our own video format whch eventually became OMF. Quicktime stared shoiwng up in 93/94 as very small images and grew from there.

I remember downloading small movies of "Lupo the Butcher" as Quicktime.

Good to know. I guess if I had really thought about it I would have realized that the dates didn't work out. ;D

Oh, I agree completely. AVI is a pain in the ass a good portion of the time. Problem is, it's already so universal in the editing world. As for quicktime, I find it to be an even more finnicky format (and REEEAAALLLY slow).

Quicktime, though it can still hold different codecs, is much more controlled and universal.

Yeah... because that's what Apple is all about... control... ;)

Could that be because you deal mostly with Avid...? Serious question here; I'm not just trying to piss you off.

Scary. I almost made that same joke when I was typing that sentence. ;D

No offense taken. I do deal mostly with Avids, and with ProTools, so yeah that makes sense, however I have dealt with FCP and PPro editors before and they still have never asked for an AVI. AVI just isn't used much in my section of the world. Which I'll grant to you isn't the most film-centric area. If there was a bright center of the film universe I'm in the area that is fathest from. Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

Missouri actually. It's more metaphorically distant instead of strict geography. :)

Oooohhhh, my mistake. I thought that you were making a Jersey accent reference with that word... I guess I overthought that one...
