Can anyone walk me through 24pA Footage to DVD in Adobe Premiere CS4 and Encore CS4?

I would LOVE step by step instructions as I have been reading the forums until my eyes bleed. There is something going wrong with my footage when I output it to DVD and it looks almost like a slideshow with lots of jaggies / artifacts. (And NO it is NOT JUST REGULAR STROBING ASSOCIATED WITH 24pA.) Sorry, but I know someone will bring that up.

Here's what I would LOVE: 1.) Project Settings for Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.
2.) Adobe Encore CS4 settings...(they are greyed out and set to 29.97)

3.) Do I need to use Adobe Media Encoder? Can I just export from Premiere to Encore? Why are the settings greyed out in Encore when I have edited in a 24p timeline? Please see: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=rkn1jr&s=7

If you can solve this, you will be my hero! What am I doing wrong?

Well the fact that you have 24pa footage in a 29.97 timeline presents the issue. Here is what you need to do.

Create a new sequence by selecting FILE- NEW- Sequence (or Ctrl N). A window will appear, select DV 24p and then the option that fits your footage (either Standard or Widescreen). Note that Standard refers to the aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9), not Standard or High Definition. After choosing the appropriate preset, name your sequence and click OK. You can copy/paste your time line from the other sequence to save you from starting over.

To export straight into to Encore go to FILE- Adobe Dynamic Link- Send to Encore. Build the menu to your liking.

Let me know how that works for you.

Even after using dynamic link? And you are verfying that your sequence is 24p in Premiere before sending it to Encore?

Just to clarify, my suggestion for creating the sequence was in Premiere Pro not Encore. You created a 24p timeline in PP, used Dynamic Link to move the project into Encore and it still shows as 29.97 in Encore? And you are sure the footage is 24pa?

Yes, and I started from scratch again. Hey, could I call you? Let me know! It's just too hard to explain over forums.

UPDATE:

See the screencapture above? Yes, that is what fixed my problem. NTSC Progressive High Quality 7MB VBR 2 Pass

The only difference I can see between this one and the others is that it is Progressive, which is what I know I needed to output as. Can anyone fill me in as to why this was so hard for me to find? How is this not in more discussion forums? Is it just common sense? Is there another way to export this way? Sorry, I am at a loss as to why it took me so long to figure out something that I thought the program would take care of...

Please, if you have any input or other suggestions on a better or different way to do this, let me know! At least now I feel like I can finally shoot some video with this thing and have it look decent! Sure, the strobing is still there, but it has GREAT color and doesn't look like a slideshow.

I popped in the DVDs I had made previously and it is totally different. Even through the "output to encore" option it was still not coming out correctly!

Anyways, any other input would be appreciated!

P.S. Is it 32khz audio instead? I had been using 48khz and when i click on my footage, the info pane shows it is 32khz?

I am glad you figured it out, but I don't have any suggestions on a better way without knowing the total workflow from the beginning. I never mess with the transcode settings so I would have never thought to look there.

Yep. Used 24pa 90% of the time; quite dandy.

The only time I had issues was if I accidentaly mixed 24pa with 30p or 60i. Maybe if you posted a clip of the footage it might shine another light on things.

Hey Cole, I am pretty sure I am picking the correct option in Premiere Pro. Now, once it is edited etc.. and you go to "Adobe Dynamic Link" and then to "Send to Encore" there is a window that pops up http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=rkn1jr&s=7 like in my original post. Do you get the same thing? Could you test this for me by looking at one of your projects?

When you right-click on the Premiere Pro Sequence name in the list (not the name of the timeline) in the project panel, what settings does it say? Just like in this picture.

Do you leave yours at automatic? You say you don't change them, but maybe they are changed correctly for a different reason--some step I am missing.

See if any of those are different in your projects. Thanks!

Update: I looked at a training video, and the same boxes were greyed out in that video as well--probably not changeable. But I'm not sure why it doesn't burn correctly without changing settings in encore for me buy it does for you?

Yes, that first pic is right. I believe that no matter what frame rate you use 29.97 will appear for DVD. If it is a 24p project the data has a flag to let the DVD player know. I checked my PP Timeline in the Encore bin and the DVD transcoding is set to Automatic.

I know currently most DVD players play progressive DVDs with no problem. But I remember some older models needing to be switched between interlaced and progressive. Just a shot in the dark but is it possible the player isn't on the right setting for progressive? Have you watched the DVD on your computer? Is this your first 24p project on DVD and also the first time playing it on the system you are having the problem?

im working on outputting a project I shot in 24p cs4, I too leave mine on automatic, seems to guess the right settings because they play fine on both tv and pc.

Cole, yes it is my very first project and first time exporting. I will try exporting again leaving the settings to automatic--maybe something got messed up last time. I put the DVD into a bluray player and these new discs I burned at the setting I described came out totally different than the last ones--they came out looking as they should! So I will have to do some more experimenting...

Thank you maranfilms for your input--getting a few opinions helps.
