Can all 60i decks play & digitize 24pA?

I've heard a variety of opinions on the topic, and haven't gotten a consistent response.

My camera buddy says, "All formats the DVX-100 shoots are (ultimately) 60i, even 24pA. The editing SOFTWARE will remove the Advanced Pulldown, thereby CREATING 23.98 video. ANY DV deck that can play 60i footage can play and digitize 24pA."

My editor buddy says, "No. 24pA is a DIFFERENT kind of video altogether. If the DECK cannot read the flagged frames, the software won't be ABLE to remove the Advanced Pulldown. Only decks that can play 60i footage WITH the 2:3:3:2 Pulldown will work."

Normally I'd believe with my editor friend, but he admits to NEVER editing in 24pA before. And my camera buddy has NEVER edited at all. So... I don't know who to believe.

Any deck can play the tape, whichever pulldown you use. Whether or not the deck can transmit the 24p flags to your NLE is another matter.

The vast majority can. Only a few have been reported as not being able to do it.

Thanks David,

Any idea where I can find out whether or not a deck will transmit those flags? Doesn't seem like a limitation any device would advertise.

In particular I'm looking at the Sony GV-HD700 or the HVR-M15U.

The only decks I've ever heard of not transmitting the flags were some of the early JVC dual VHS/DV decks, I think they were named something like SR10 and SR20...

BTW, in case anyone else is faced with my same decision.

I ended up buying the Sony GV-HD700, and it works with my 24pA footage, just fine. So, my worries were unfounded.

Also, the 16x9 screen instantly recognized my anamorphic footage and displayed it correctly. Nice touch.
