Cameras and Airplanes

I have a flightt next Sunday and wanted to carry the 500 with a AB brick on board. I havent done this since the mid 90s and was wondering what the rules are or has anyone taken a flight lately and carried on the 500 camera?

You may wish to print out the rules for carrying LiIon batteries, just in case the person at the check point gives you a hard time. There are some horror stories about LiIon batteries on planes.

I would pay extra to hand carry my HPX/PortaBrace Bag rather than have to check it as luggage. That doesn't seem to be an option however.
I have managed to carry the HPX body and detached finder in a legit carry on roller bag. Lens fit into a small shoulder bag.
The days of throwing our big Portabrace bags overhead may be numbered.
Good argument for smaller cameras though !

Well, I was planning on taking just the camera without the camera bag. I can put the lens in my overnight bag. Same with the VF. Camera would go on the floor between my feet. I did this all the time years ago, but I didnt know if that would create a problem.

I had to fly with my 500 last year but the bag I had was way too big for carry on so I took the lens and EVF and put them in my "laptop bag" (a Kata-Photo backpack) and then put the body in my regular carry on suitcase along with a weeks worth of clothes.

I felt very comfortable with that set up and it worked fine.

You have to watch out for smaller planes though. Back when I had my 200 I would put it in the same regular carry on suitcase but on my connecting flight the plane was so small they checked everything at the gate so I had to pull the 200 out and hold it in my lap.

Let me understand. You carry a full sized portabrace case on board? Or do you have a smaller case with the lens off the camera?

SOFT case, yes.

Matt,
Have you had anyone at an airline question the Portabrace's size (I had a bad experience many years ago with a Betacam in a Portabrace Run Bag and an airline employee)? I have the same case (just arrived with new 500) and was asking this very question. I've been using a Think Tank Photo "Airport Security" roll-a-board case for my HVX for many years and many flights. They make top shelf professional cases.

I was going to check to see if I could fit the HPX500 with lens removed in there and ship most of the batteries, etc. Cheers, Ray

Are you taking a domestic flight? I'd be leary of taking my camera overseas anymore. I've done that in the past twice and came back with bad/glowing pixels on the camera's CCD's. Has something to do with the high altitudes they sometimes fly planes at. Electrostatic or something maybe. Next time I have to do a shoot overseas I'm taking a cheap piece of crap or ship it on a boat. lol

Sorry to hear about your gear and this is very troublesome if one needed to go overseas with cameras.
