Camera Shuts Down

Hi everyone. I'm having some difficulties with my DVX200. Out of the blue the camera shuts down. After turning on it stays on for about 20-30 seconds with all functions working and no error message - and then it just shuts down. When I re-start, the same again. I didn't change anything and both batteries I tried are fully charged. It happens with and without cards. It also happpens on 12V DC. Both Eco settings are off. Is there a way to re-set the camera? Did anyone have that problem? I would re-install the firmware and see what happens but I can't even format the card... :-(
Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Ugh. That's not good. Sounds like a trip to Panasonic for repairs to me.

The only time my camera appears to shut down is when anything got to close to the eye sensor. This sensor can sense when your eye or anything gets close to the EVF then it completely turns off the LCD screen. Every that happened, I though my camera went dead. It would freak me out. So I disabled the feature.

It's great for saving power, but it can be very annoying and can cause panic for a brief second, until you realize it was just the senor shutting down the LCD screen. I don't use the EVF much except on extremely sunny days, and then I have a cover for the LCD. Was hoping your problem was as simple as this. Hope you are able to solve it without having to use the warranty.

It doesn't sound like this is Macromicro's issue, since the post mentions "20 - 30 seconds", but maybe.

How did you "disable the feature"? I found how to lower the sensitivity so it happens less often, but can't find a way to totally disable it.

I agree. Was posting for the benefit of others. It is very discomforting to have a camera go down. Especially a new piece of equipment and a camera that we also own. Feel sorry for him. Hope someone has an answer.

Please contact Panasonic Tech Support. We have a call center located in Virginia and service facilities in New Jersey and Los Angeles.

You're not really "disabling the feature," you're simply telling the camera that you prefer to use either the LCD or the EVF and not have it automatically switch via the sensor. You do this by going Menu > Output Setup > choose LCD or EVF. Auto will enable the sensor. If you're very fancy you will assign this function to a User SW button so you can change your mind on-the-fly.

If the OP's issue really is a camera that simply stops working after a few moments, then that is horrible and he will need to contact Panasonic for support.

Even then, the EVF will always switch by the sensor. If the EVF is on, so is the eye sensor. You can never have the EVF and not have the eye sensor.

So your choice is LCD-only (no switching ever), or LCD/EVF auto-switching.

Thanks for the replies, I wish it was something I missed like the eye sensor. Is anyone aware of a way to reset the camera to factory defaults - I mean like a computer or a phone?

other function -> initial set

That seems to only re-set the scene files and color stuff. In the meantime I talked to the Panasonic endorsed repairer (we actually have two here in Sydney) and he said it sounds definitely odd, possibly shutting down because it's sensing overheating. Maybe an over eager sensor? I'll drop the cam in on Tuesday after easter, see what happens. I could never quite work it out but I believe it comes with a 3 year warranty -did I get that right?
