Camera Settings - is there a "Gold Standard&q

Are there settings for the camera (in regards to Master Pedestal, Black level, etc.) that are considered to be ideal for a "Film Look". I am just wondering if the "out of the box" settings are fine when shooting in F5 or F6 or should they be tweaked. I am shooting a short and am just getting used to this camera. Thanks!

The F5 and F6 settings are fine the way they are. The "tweaking" you would do would be for artistic effect, and that's totally subjective to your eye.

Remember, though, that a lot of the "film look" happens outside the camera.

Also depends on what kind of "film look" you want -- color reversal?  Cross-processed negative?  High-contrast 5245, or low-con 5277?  There are a lot of very, very different film looks. Just look at "Traffic" -- they used different looks in the same picture. "Joan of Arcadia" does the same thing, the police station shots are always very blue and dark, etc.

I have a series of settings recipes that emulate most of the Magic Bullet Movie Looks on my new DVX DVD, so you can use those recipes to dial in about 12 or 13 different "film looks".

As David said, a tremendous amount depends on what you're pointing the camera at, of course.  The settings are really just icing on the cake, but I came away quite impressed at how much you can do with the settings.

Test, test and test, and for a start, if you don't have the time to test, you can have a look at DVD like Barry did, you will certainly save time.

I am glad to hear about the settings in the DVD - I just pre-ordered it yesterday. I own Magic Bullet but it takes so damn long to render that I would rather just color on set and have the look that I want right there. Thanks guys.
