Camera safety?

So as I mentioned in an other thread, I'll be going to my hometown of Mexico City in the upcoming weeks.

Can anyone give me any tips on how to keep my camera safe in a big city? I have never traveled with something as expensive and bulky as my DVX, and I want to make sure I don't get it stolen or anything.

Will it be too much of a problem to have it hanging off my neck? I figure no one will try to jack a camera as big as a DVX, especially when it's around someone's neck, but should I have a sports bag or something to tuck it away into?

Yes. If a thief sees that you have an expensive camera, they'll keep watching. You'll stand out since most people don't walk around with equipment like that. But if you just keep some common sense about you and stay aware of your surroundings you should be fine.

Hahaha
Well I figure they might be keeping an eye on me, but I doubt they'll try anything in a public place or something.

Of course you never know. That's why I'm asking for advice. I want to have my camera as safe as possible, but there's always a chance that something could happen.

I for one would look for a good travel insurance for your gear. In case you can't well I've never been in that situation, but I would make sure to back up everything you capture, in case they get the cam you won't lose everything.

How big are you? I'm 6'2" 200lbs and have been doing martial arts for most of my life, so it's never been an issue.

Sadly, that matters. What's your story?

I fail in that category.

5'6, 160lbs, hardly any muscle mass, asthma, heart murmur, etc. And I'll be traveling with my 5'1, 57 year old mom :P

lol. that's actually a pretty good idea.

I wasn't kidding at all, I have stashed a camera in one before and I know several pro photogs who do the same. Who is going to want to steal a grungy looking diaper bag? Best camo available. Just go to a thrift store and see what you can find.

Whenever I'm out with mine, I literally stay in contact with it. If I'm eating in a restaurant, it's in the case and either on the floor with the strap around my leg or in the seat next to me. I know a guy who was shooting in Miami with a DVX out on the street and this dude just walked right up and stabbed him and snatched it and ran. You can never be too careful. If I'm shooting in a shady area, I always take a friend or two just to hang around and keep an eye on EVERYONE around us at all times.

A thief will simply cut it off your neck and run.

+1 on insurance. It's not expensive.

+1 on the diaper bag. To add authenticity, I suggest adding one or two soiled Huggies. Of course, you'll need to add wipes, baby powder, and diaper rash cream. Throw in a changing pad, too, and two or three new diapers. And a story book is never a bad idea.

I think I'd let go if someone stabbed me. Even if I could normally take the guy, if he already has a knife and I'm not ready... DVX's aren't that expensive.
