Camera Monitor

Another question I have... I am looking into possible monitor configurations for the HPX300. I am seriously looking at the Ikan v8000 HD monitor, but I have a problem.

How does it interface with the HPX300? The Ikan only has HDMI, Component, S Video and Composite inputs. I can see no way for the HPX to output an HD signal to the monitor, unless:

A) You forgo HD and use the Composit which I belelive will interface, but at SD.

B) Use an SDI to HDMI converter, such as the AJA Hi5. Not sure how this will effects picture quality?

Any suggestions?

Whats odd is that the $800 SmallHD has a better native resolution than the $2,100 Panasonic, and the SmallHD is a full inch larger than the Panasonic...

So whats the catch? lol.

However, even with the SmallHD, we are faced with the connection problem to the camera... Looks like we may have to go with Panasonic, if we do in-fact choose the a couple of HPX300's.

I'd strongly recommend the Panasonic BT-LH80WU 7.9" Multi-Format Color LCD...

Hello,
Henri is right, the BT_LH80 have many advantage. Focus-in-red fonction, Pixel-to-Pixel 2.4 magnification, waveform, Gold mount Anton Bauer battery (same as your HPX), 2.39:1 guides, low power consumption, solidity, easy setting access, blue only displaying for calibration etc...

The bad thing is the HD-SDI board in option.

Guillaume,

Not any more... the new "WU" model has the HD-SDI board already installed. In my case, I had to purchase and install that board since I bought my Panasonic monitor two years ago. And yes, indeed, this is an amazing monitor for the listed advantages you just mentioned. Its irreplaceable!

Landon,

I did mention the smallHD DP1 since your first option is the iKan V8000HDMI with HDMI only. I believe the DP1 should a better option.

Regarding an SDI to HDMI converter, I would suggest Blackmagic Design Mini Converter SDI to HDMI, $450 at B&H with free shipping and AC adapter included. I do have one for my Samsung 22" Color LCD Presentation Monitor for Client/Agency, which only accepts Component HD / HDMI. Wonderful converter: a very little and reliable piece of equipment. Good luck!

I just had someone come in to compare the Ikan v8000 HD monitor with the Panasonic BT-LH80WU and they chose to pay more for the Panasonic due to better tool set and higher build quality.

We need to make sure that we don't just look at specs when we research, it will lead you down the wrong road from time to time just because some of the better monitors don't have the best specs.

We have a couple BT-LH80WU monitors left that we received at a really good price. Let me know if anyone is interested and PM me. Let's see if we can make a deal! :)

I've just received the SmallHD Monitor. Where do I start.....

Build Quality - Excellent.
Cost - Excellent.
Picture Quality - Excellent.
Functionality - Excellent.
Accessories - Excellent and well thought out.
Customer Service - Beyond Excellent.
Shipping & Handling - Excellent.

Need I go on.

If your looking at getting a couple of HPX-300's the SmallHD DP-1 is the way to go. As previously mentioned Black Magic do a small compact HDSDi - HDMi Converter for just over $400 (US). Mount that onto the back of the unit and use the power out Lemo on the back of the Camcorder to power the Monitor........BAM.......HD Monitoring for under $1300 (US).

I agree with steadicamsteel on all points - it's an excellent monitor.

I was shooting in very bright sunlight over this past weekend and its visibility and clarity were outstanding!

Also very light weight.

I make a foamcore sunshade for it (cost about $5) that I can rip on/off with velcro.

Small HD

I just placed an order with Small HD. I spoke with Clint Chesson on the phone and he was VERY helpful and found a way to make my situation work for everybody. These guys are a class act and I can't wait to get my monitor. I purchased the Monitor, four batteries, a sleeve and an HDMI cable and with shipping I think it was all like $1100. You can't beat that.

These guys rock.

Okay everyone, here is where we stand right now...
Our company's primary delivery format will be Television and DVD / Bluray. We may throw some of our films into a very limited release at some Landmark theaters, but Theatrical will not be our primary market.

So the dilemma we face right now is that we are trying to determine the best way to spend our initial investment. The $5,000,000 we look to have after the IPO is complete will be ate up really fast if we go hog wild on equipment we don't need.

A great deal of this money must be set-aside for DVD marketing, replication, and executive and administrative expenses until the company starts to see a profit...

This leaves us with around $100,000 to put fit a complete film production package (Cameras, Lights, Dollies, Tripods, etc) and an additional $150,000 to outfit our post facilities (Apple Final Cut Studio, recording studio, color correction suite, etc).

So, at this point are still trying to determine rather to buy a single RED One or (2) HPX300's. Since our primary market is TV and DVD / Bluray, I don't think the RED is really required, but we still want to the best quality we can get...

I recently seen a video on the HPX300 on youtube, and I noticed some major color fringing (i guess thats what you call it?). In the closeups, almost everything had a "purple fringe" around it....

So at this point, we are kind of stuck on what the best purchase option would be... But if we go Panasonic, we will probably spring for the SmallHD monitors, since they are 1/2 the price of the Panny...

Thanks!

PS) That video I was telling you about is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSP2U79a1bE&feature=related
Make sure to watch it in HD and let me know if you also detect the color fringes?

UPDATE: After putting together a package that I think will work great for us, we are going with the following package:
1x RED ONE
1 x Basic RED Production Pack
1 x 2 Batteries and Charger Kit
1 x Nikon Mount
2 x Red Drive
1 x Zeiss 35mm, 50mm and 85mm still primes set
1 x Nikon Zoom (have not decided on model yet). Possibly a used Cine Zoom if we can get one cheap enough?
1 x RED Package from Redrock Micro (Matte Box and Follow Focus)
1 x SmallHD Production Monitor

This package will allow us to only have one camera, but it should come in right around $30k, and be of higher quality for feature films than the HPX300....
