Camera head damaged by dust

Hi,

I have been shooting regurarly on a construction site for 3 months now, working for two months with a DVXa (new).
I have taken every precaution to protect camera from dust (and there is DUST on this site, believe me), aside from getting a cover (due to finantial restrains and local availability), but I never opened the cassete mechanism inside the site, and I taped it with gaffers tape. I adiotionally covered the cam with a plastic bag or vinyl sheet (adherent plastic sheet).
Last week i got some weirf drops on my tape, every ten frames or so. I thought the heads were dirty so I used a cleaning tape, no results. So I took it to the Importer's shop, only to find out that the reason the dropouts existed was because the head is damaged. They seem to think it was due to the dusty environment I was working in.
Anyways, other than buying a cover (wich I did now), any ideas to protect camera from dust?
Chhers,
Pedro

Re: Camera head damaged by dust

The DVX100 does not have much in the way of weather or environmental sealing.  If you're using it in a hostile environment, maybe you should consider using an underwater housing--the only solution that completely seals the camera.  Housings are expensive, but a lot cheaper than replacing a camera.  Someone just posted a message about the Epic Elite Pro housing and it's only $369--it should be great for dusty conditions and the price is right.

Is your camera still having problems.  How did they diagnose the "broken head"?  Was that just a guess or did they examine it microscopically?  Was your recording cylinder replaced?

hey Barry,
thanks for the tip.
I dunno how they got to it, but the recording head was replaced, free of charge.
