Hi guys, I did a quick camera comparison with the 5D Mark III (H.264 & RAW), FS700 (Blackmagic Hyperdeck 2), Blackmagic Cinema Camera (ProRes & 2.5K RAW) and the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera - all with the same lens (24-70 II 1:2.8). I'm looking forward how far CD will improve the image quality of the FS700! At the moment only the FS700 has a lot of Highlight Aliasing.

If you want to have a look at the source footage (ProRes 4444) let me know!

best regards

What can you do about the Highlight Aliasing? Sony is probably not going to fix it since the FS700 is old news to them. I do think they could fix it as Canon, RED and Sony has fixed that issue in the past.

If the 7Q does all that it's hyped to do, the aliasing problem will be fix and the camera (at least on paper specs - S-Log + 4:2:2 10-bit compressed + 4:4:4 12-bit compressed + RAW + HFR) will be on another level than the BMC and Canons.

I think we need another term for this because it's not really highlight aliasing, 'black highlight clipping' perhaps.

Did you get a chance to take a 4K still in the same situation to compare?

Our hunch is that the 4K output *ought* *please* *may* be free of this.... :)

cheers
Paul

Yeah truthfully the black pixels that occur at highlight edges haven't really bothered me as much as I thought they might, just make sure you keep your sharpening way down since the first thing to get over sharpened is the edges of those black pixels which just makes the black area bigger... Also the issue seems a bit less visible in low contrast gammas like SLOG2, though its possible it will just come back full force once you LUT/grade your contrast back in.
