I just received my hmc-40 and so far I’m thrilled. I’m looking for a professional, airline carryon friendly, camera bag to go with the camera. I’ve used portabrace in the past but would appreciate hearing what others are using. Anyone have any recommendations?
I like it, because if I'm shooting on the go, I can just loosen the chest strap, swing it around my hips, and pull my camera out, rather than having to take it off.
I use this Petrol Trolley Bag http://www.petrolbags.com/Camera-Trolley-Bags?q=node/129 it's pretty good the camera strap needed to modify with a zip tie(Its a bit long) but it's nice as it allows me to carry my laptop as well.
Thanks for the input everyone. You’ve got a good point Stephen, function dictates need. I edit on a laptop but I don’t always bring it along on a field shoot so a camera only bag works fine. I’m very tempted by a backpack but they seem to be more expense, weight, and space then I would normally need. I think I’ve narrowed down my choices to:
Kata Capsule 183-DL $129.95 int. 16.5 x 9.8 x 8.3 (1342.11 cu in) ext. 21.3 x 11.8 x 10 (43.1 linear in)
Kata CB100 $149.90 int. 13.8 x 8.9 x 8.9 (1093.1 cu in) ext. 18.1 x 9.8 x 13 (40.9 linear in)
All things being equal, I’m going to order the Capsule 183 unless I hear bad feedback. Even though it’s listed as more of a hobbyist bag, the price and the dimensions look good to me.
Is there any opinions from you guys about this Backpack?
I like the idea of a backpack just for the convenience of having it if i need it and the portability of a full kit being able to be just right there all.
Right now they have it at $149.99 including an instant rebate at BH, It's big, some 7lbs just by itself, but it seems rugged. Anything else on backpacks of this price range seem a lot smaller and even if i can fit the kit I am building from the get go, i want to buy a backpack i could continue using after I buy other accesories ie. 35mm adapter and such...
Let me know your opinions on it.
Sorry to the OP, but it seem like a waste of space to do a different thread for the same kind of thing.
New HMC41 (UK version of HMC40) here. I, too, have been in a bit of a bag dilemma. I wanted a backpack, but something not too big and heavy, but still allowing a good basic shooting kit.
I settled on the Kata R-102 (also available as R-103, with a laptop compartment). I've attached a few photos.
The first one shows the camera all packed and ready to go up a mountain tomorrow. As well as the camera, the main compartment holds: IDX battery, Rode NTG-1 with softie, XLR unit, headphones and raincover for the backpack. Inside the "lid" I have a wallet with filters and wallet for SDHC cards, and some plastic garbage bags to throw over the camera if it rains. Inside the two outer pockets I've got cleaning cloths.
It comes with several little pouches to keep your goodies held together, and a load of places to hook things on, and straps for a small tripod (but I'll not be hanging the Sachtler off it!).
The third photo shows the "quick access" hatch on the top. I'm not sure how much I'll use it, but in theory, it allows me to quickly pop the camera out without opening the whole lid. The camera is held in with a Velcro strap.
I've always liked Kata bags and accessories, a good mix of price and performance. My last camera was a Sony V1 and I had a Petrol backpack, but oh boy was it heavy. Petrol equivalents of the Kata R-102 seemed to be about twice the weight, 3kg (6lbs!).
One of the few complaints I would make about the Kata are that I can't have the XLR unit and mic attached while it's in there - but I knew that before I bought the bag and the alternative was to get a much larger, heavier backpack. I have a Kata CC-193 shoulder bag if I need to do that, but it is a bit oversized for the HMC40/41.
