Camera and handling noise with shotgun mic on DVX200?

Hi

I remember the issues I had with my HMC151 regarding cameranoise (Zoom and autofocus) and handling when shooting in manual when using the onboard mic-mount to mount my RODE shotgun mic. Finally the solution was a cold shoe mount adapter and a universal shock mount for my RODE, light etc. But I did a lot of trial and error before I got that far.

Yesterday I had the DVX200 in my hands for about ½ hour. Unfortunately without having anything but the camera - no external mics or anything. BUT I did hear more sounds from within the camera (some kind of motorized sound and mechanical sounds) and I just wondered if these sounds - (and the fact that there is now three rings on the lens itself that also might produce some handling noise in manual mode) - could be an issue regarding how a shotgun mic is mounted. I very seldom use the build-in mic for anything. Any experiences with soundrecording from mounted shotguns? Is the onboard mic-mount suitable, or will it catch up handling noise etc?

Thx in advanced.

/Morten

I think I better rephrase my question:
Does anyone have experience with mounting external mics (fx RØDE shotgun) to the DVX200 on-board mic-mount? If so, does the sounds from handling the camera (and/or the cameras self-produced sounds (autofocus, on-board electronics etc)) in any way get recorded?
Any experience with the built in mic would be appreciated too.

Anyone?

It's just like any other camera -- the closer the mic is, and the more sensitive the mic is, the more likely it will be to pick up any noise that the camera makes.

The only operational noise I can think of that might present a potential issue would be the zoom noise when at its fastest speed; that's why there's a separate "Fast Zoom" menu option. You can enable a really fast zoom, but it makes more noise as it zooms; or you can disable the "fast zoom" and it's quieter. The difference in speed is about 4 seconds from wide to tele, vs. about 5 seconds from wide to tele...

Another idea would be to use a more directional mic that rejects the side a bit better. Also be sure AGC is off because that may be pumping the camera noise when its quiet otherwise.

Thank You Barry and Bill.
On my HMC151 I had it all mounted on top of the camera and used another shockmount for my ROEDE. The onboard mic mount took to much sound from handling...guess I will do the same on the DVX200. Anyway - if I end up buying this camera I will describe my experiences here...thx again!

Mic noise

Hi I have the HC-X and I don't notice or hear noise from its onboard mics but I've only shot a few times. The Mic is in front and about 4" away from the lens so I don't think you'll hear anything because I don't hear the lens unlike my Canon EF lenses.

I don't own the DVX200 but they are close enough that I'm 99% sure the lenses are very similar.
