Call For 7Q Update

Enough is enough. I don't mind waiting for a product to be tweaked before released but I do mind being kept in the dark about progress being made. We haven't heard anything from CD for quite a while. Keep your customers informed and they will wait for you (generally). At least Black Magic keep their customers informed by giving specific reasons for a delay (albeit frustrating in it's own way). So far we have NOTHING only vague promises 2 months after the initial release date has passed. I have been keeping the brakes on certain projects assuming it would be here by now.

Is something seriously wrong behind the curtains? Or am I just too damned impatient?? Grrrr

Are you impatient? Yes. Has CD eagerly over promised on some dates? Yes.

I'm excited for the 7Q too but I'm not holding off on any shoots for it.

I think they've been very communicative an up-front with things, no?
Probably now they have sorted out what they need to concentrate on first and are busy getting it ready instead of spending time on forums ;)

Generally, what happens on these things is that there's a problem with production. I'm only speculating, but, one of the component manufacturers can't deliver the quantities they promised. Once this is sorted, deliveries will begin.

AFAIK they're working away. Latest from some retailers is perhaps end of sept, maybe more oct. I assume Dan is super busy, perhaps at IBC.

I don't think they've been 'dark', i think they've done their question asking and now have to deliver.

cheers
Paul

With all due respect -- this is "entitlement" at its worst. The company doesn't owe you (or me, or anyone) a speck of information. If they provide something, well, good on them -- but they certainly don't "owe" it. They haven't taken a penny of your money, they haven't entered into any contract, so they don't owe any of us anything.

I have been keeping the brakes on certain projects assuming it would be here by now.
This is a mistake, and one I've been trying to caution people about for years. New products never come out on time, and planning projects around an unreleased product is a certain way to heartache and frustration. Even if it gets released -- who's to say there won't be bugs in the first release? It's kind of foolhardy for any of us to rush out and put an untested product to work.

This pre-hyping the manufacturers do may be popular, but it's just serving to piss people off. Once upon a time, manufacturers used to let you know that a product was coming, and their targeted delivery date, and then they SHUT THE HELL UP and put their efforts into making the product, not into endlessly promoting and hyping it before it came out.

Or am I just too damned impatient??
Either that, or I'm too damned old. :)

And this is how the rumors begin, and then the next thing you know one of those useless rumor sites will start reporting that there IS a problem with production, and then the pre-orders will start being cancelled, and there'll be a whole poopstorm happening when ... in reality ... there's probably nothing of the sort. Stuff just takes longer than people expect it to. Convergent hasn't made a dedicated monitor before. Stuff takes time to get it right.

As long as they haven't released it yet, they haven't hurt anybody. They haven't taken anybody's money and they haven't screwed up anybody's production with a prereleased, glitchy product either, like some other manufacturers have done.

So the only thing that can happen now, if this discussion continues, is Convergent's reputation will take an undeserved hit.

Said it a million times, probably will say it a million more, but this communication-during-development trend that Red started, does nothing to serve the customer or the company better, and just ends up with everyone having a sour taste in their mouth. Even Red has learned the lesson and said that they're not going to preannounce stuff anymore, they're just going to release it when it's ready...

I think this is all very likely true.

In the old days, the same question-asking was done during product development too, it was just done under NDA. All the same feedback was gotten, all the same customer requests were put into play, but it was done quietly. Having now had extensive experience watching it go both ways, I think companies would be best served going back to the tried-and-true method. Which means we as customers wouldn't be subjected to being hyped up for months, we wouldn't go through the frustration and irritation, we wouldn't be blown to-and-fro with rumors on the wind, instead we'd just hear "oh, wow, look what Convergent just released, an Odyssey 7Q, and it's available today!" That would be a much superior system, IMO.

Hmmm, sorry 'bout all this, must have woken up on the grumpy side of the bed today.

maybe I got up on the grumpy side too because I agree with everything you said. I'm looking forward to this product, I think it will be a good additional tool, but that's all it is - a tool. I'll do without until it arrives, I'll do without it once it arrives until I've become comfortable with it (both from an operation and reliability standpoint), then I'll use the tool in production.

No doubt it will be a "cool tool" and for that reason I'm anxious to get my hands on it like many, but I realize releasing a new product is a huge task.

Barry hit the nail on the head. Companies like Apple never talk about things in development, let alone register to an internet community and actively engage with customers to ask questions/give answers/etc. CD has done a lot to give us updates and while they maybe over-promised on the deadlines, they don't owe us anything.

In regards to pushing projects back, that's a foolish move. I've had plenty of projects that I was really hoping I'd have the 7Q for, but alas, it didn't come out. Did I push back my shoots? Nope. Did it change what I ended up shooting? Nope. Create with the tools you have today, there will always be something better coming out in the future. If you keep holding off for the next piece of gear, you'll never make anything.

I remember being promised the 700 last year by a certain date by Abel Cine. They specifically told me not to book anything with that date in mind.
I remember looking at my sales rep and saying "I have never booked a job on the promise of a piece of gear, only when I have it in my hands..."
It's really the only way to fly...
