California (music video)

Re: California (music video)

i'm impressed, for what it's worth. nice storyline, and how the video starts off with the guy in back of the patrol car and ends there too. music recording and cinematography-wise, very proffesional. right on! i'm not a big fan of rap, but i can appreciate a well done music vid.

Re: California (music video)

love the camera movement. kept me entertained even when it was just a dude sitting on a porch rapping. nice job.

question: how did you do the light streaks on the CU of the girl's face when shes all blue-ish?

Re: California (music video)

That song is off the hook  ;D

Excellent music video, good job! Just out curiosity, what were your in-cam settings for this? Also, what on-cam or NLE filters did you use?

Re: California (music video)

I would like to know that as well Dan (cam settings).. also, did you use any type of lighting in this video besides natural? It looks like it was all shot on sunny days. Great work.

Re: California (music video)

Hey everyone, I'll try to answer these the best I can remember.

Detail: Thin, FPS: 24pA, Master Ped: -13, Gamma: Cinegamma

I cut it in FCP 4.5, and used a lot of 55mm's film look effects; gradients, skin smoothing for the actress, (we used harsh lighting on her) etc.

The lighting was mainly natural light, as you all can tell but also we used a 3 light arri kit, consisting of 2 650's & a 1k. Also a 4x4 Kino bank for scenes that did not make the final cut.

Glad you guys liked the video. I was wondering if the content would spark some criticism, but so far so good. Thanks!

Re: California (music video)

Damn CJ!

This is great. Looked very professional; as if you would see it on MTV. Very filmic and wonderfully shot. Lots of great cuts and use of Editing to keep the eyes busy and a nice mix of performance and conceptual. Inspiring work. Chick was smoking as was Video. The one part I wasnt digging on was the 'fast car' scenes as I felt it detracted from an already perfect video. I felt it took away from the 'mood' or 'pacing' that was established. I do know that as an artist one must take risks to see if something will work or not and because it doesnt work for me is 'subjective'?

Nevertheless, great great great.

4 of 5 Stars on the HUdsonometer.

Re: California (music video)

I think panasonic needs to use your work as an example of what can be truly achieved with this camera. Your lighting and camera setups from this video and Roadside Attractions are the best I've seen so far. Good work, you've made me a true believer in this camera. I will have to purchase one soon.

I'd like to see what kind of feature work you could do with the dvx. Keep on cranking them out.

Re: California (music video)

I echo all the praise that you've received thus far. Outstanding music vid. Great cinematography, lighting, music, story and wrapped up with professional level editing. First class work.

Congrats!!! ;)

Re: California (music video)

Hey CJ - dvx 100 or 100a ?

How about mtv or any broadcast - its definitely up there with others I've seen on a blockbuster budgets-  so - are we gonna see it on the box ?

good work ;)

Have you used other film look plugs such as MB or natress ?
Wondering what your take is on how 55mm compares ?
Also - you filmed in 24p which already has a nice deinterlaced film look - so why the need for the film look plugins - just curious  :)

cheers

Re: California (music video)

You mentioned you used 55mm's film look effects. Is that made by Digital Film Tools? I am a big hip hop fan and I thought the video was cool but I would have to give it to Rob who shot/directed the Hide Hide Ho video that he posted a few months ago. I am sure its still on this site somewhere. That has been in my opinion the best rap video to be posted on here yet that was shot with a DVX100.

Re: California (music video)

CJ,

Your work is amazing as usual. I thought the car mounted stuff was top notch and that the video needed it to break up the monotony of dolly shots and front close-ups. Very well done. Besides, we all love sparkling rims. :D

DFT 55mm film effects is amazing, as your work proves time and time again. Since I started using it, I have not touched Magic Bullet and haven't looked back.

Looking forward to seeing more from you. ;)

Re: California (music video)

Bitchin! dude, its so much better then 80% of the crap on mtv. i love that it has a story and it isnt some lame ass rap performance piece where all the hip hop guys gather at some club or party and check out the ho's with big booties while rapping like fools into the camera. looks very pro, good job man! i dig the car stuff. the girl is a cutie...and that helps! great to see what someone can do with video, big shot music vid guys cant make half decent vids with 35mm and 50g's+.

good job...so what are the chances of this being on mtv? do you just have to submit it and hope for the best? just curious if you have any sort of dialog going with the mtv people...

Re: California (music video)

Beautiful looking.. well done.

This board is fantastic for confirming that my next purchase is a 100A and not a Sony PD-170. Really Panasonic should be advertising on this board.

Re: California (music video)

Very nice.

Did you sweat a bit as your camera was being whipped about filming the car scene?

Did you film this in the east bay?
