GH4 Cages for GH5

The new firmware 2.0 that's coming at the end of the month will enable you to electronically lock the DISP button.

That's great news. I suffer from the same difficulty with the DISP button position. I love how Panasonic listens to its customers and gives them what they want (if at all possible).

I have the Movcam Kit from B&H and like it a lot my one and only complaint is it’s a little hard to get at the switch on the GH5 to turn it off………..no problem turning it on.

I'm curious about the magnesium construction. Is it noticeably lighter than a similar aluminum or steel cage?

I'm assuming that it's not pure magnesium. I've seen what happens when a tiny magnesium ribbon is ignited by a butane torch. I'd hate to see what a whole cage would do!

Like the look of Zacuto's offering. Really makes the GH5 / Speed Booster combo look like one solid unit.

However, not sure about the VCT baseplate? Most of our stuff is Arri dovetail based...

The cage is super light weight, even with the handle and rod base plate. It's probably the same magnesium composition as the stuff they use in camera bodies. I don't think they would allow cameras to burst into flames that easily.

MovCam Cage

MovCam Cage

I use the MoveCam Cage and absolutely love it. I ordered another one for a second GH5 Camera. It is light weight, rugged, and I like the finish ion it. I have attached some photos. You can barely see it through all the other stuff hung on the rig, but the cage itself is really well designed. I first saw it at NAB this last year, and I didn’t mind the delay in shipping because they really refined and improved the design. Without the handgrips, the cage fits nicely in your hand, and it has 2 Metabones support options. Either with the riser foot on the rod support system or a swing our foot from the cage itself. (This requires an Allen wrench.) The cages supports 15mm rods in which I have Small Rig components holding the Paralinx HDMI TX and the Small HD Focus EVF. I use a Vocas matte box and follow focus that I have had for a long time, but had to get a CamVate camera riser to get the rig off the Manfrotto plate so my fingers could get the bottom release lever open on the follow focus for positioning. For the money spent, this cage is really worth it.

Does anyone know if the Movcam cage that's available without the rods, & riser, include the HDMI support, or is that only available with the full kit?

I have the JTZ rig. It has a lot of nice features. What I don't like is the rosette mount on base plate, it's in the way when replacing battery. You have to release cage off baseplate or camera out of cage.

How often do you shoot with a butane torch on a camera? Most camera bodies these days are made of magnesium in fact the GH5 is as well. The MoveCam cage is incredibly light.

This is my GH5 Movcam Cage Kit dressed up a bit for skeptical clients that expect a bigger camera.

Does the Moviecam cage come with an optional HDMI clamp...the one Panasonic provides is a nice thought, but not remotely adequate for pro use with an external HDMI device.

The hand grips are made by KinoGrip. I know they are expensive, but custom made, stained and with the recording control cord for the remote switch plug in, were totally worth it to me. (Not remote from the USB port) I love the ball, on the left side, because while hand-holding the rig, I can place the ball in the palm of my hand, and work the follow focus with my fingers. Like everyone else here, we build our rigs to satisfy our production needs/wants. I must say, the Small HD monitor is great as well. Sharp, bright, powers the camera with a Sony battery, and quick to zoom in on screen for focusing. The combine time spent digging around for all accessories has taken a lot of time - but loving it!

Yes it does. Using the same screw holes as the Panasonic one - on the camera body. Made of metal. Funny, that on my rig above, it doesn't fit well. I've used a cable with a bendable end to keep it tucked into the camera body, and haven't even bumped it.

Vardalos, I like your rig. Is the follow focus from edelkrone?

Yes it is and I like the simplicity of the design, if your interested in the items I've rigged the GH5 with there listed below.

Our Fully Rigged Panasonic GH5-4K Camera Package includes a Movcam Camera Cage Kit, a Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 Pro lens, a Olympus 40-150mm f2.8 Pro Lens, a Edelkrone Follow Focus, a Genustech Matte Box, 4-Camera Battery’s, a Battery Charger, 4-64GB SD Cards, a Manfrotto Tripod & Fluid Head, a Porta Brace Hard Camera Case and a Porta Brace Tripod Case.

Well I decided to give the Zacuto cage a try but it looks like they screwed the pooch and tried to push it out before fully testing it, won't work with the VCT dock I ordered with it. So now it has to go back to Zacuto while I wait for a replacement. Apparently the dovetail is the culprit on the cage and it was not machined correctly to fit on the dock.

Interesting. We were going to go with the Zacuto Cage. Maybe we should hold off?

One thing we're not keen on, is the VCT ecosystem, as everything of ours is either Arri or Manfrotto based.

But the Zacuto GH5 Cage looks to be the best dedicated GH5 cage on the market at the moment. At least for those with Speed Boosters.
