GH4 Cages for GH5

Fully rigged with some of my large lenses I probably get up to the 16-18lb range...

I use native lenses (12-35, 35-100, 100-300) and the most I've had on the cage is a caged Atomos Ninja Inferno (w/large batteries), a small light, and a Videomic pro - totals about 7 to 8 lbs. I couldn't even venture a guess what more than doubling that would do. . . It seems strong - probably depends on the weight distribution & how connected. The bottom under the tripod screw is the thickest cross-sectional area so if that were the part receiving the weight it could work, but the sides & top are certainly thinner - wouldn't hang too much there.

Fully rigged with some of my large lenses I probably get up to the 16-18lb range...my handle bolts to a NATO rail on the top center part of any cage I'll use and I lift the rig on and off my VCT-14 plate to go from tripod to shoulder...do you think that the cage is stiff/strong enough for that...just looking for a guess unless someone else uses this set up with a heavy rig also and can give some feedback

SmallRig's cage, & particularly it's Rod system, is probably not the best choice for your needs. The Kung Fu kit, or possibly Movcam's, & Zacuto's, systems offer stiffer builds better suited for heavy rigging.

I think you may be right...I use very solid cage with a similar set up with my GH4's....the cage is much deeper though...less access but rock solid...the Lockcircle is much more, but things like a multi port lock and a focusing measurement pin are appealing...appreciate the feedback from all!

Looks like the Lockcircle cage will come in around 470 including cage, metal multiport lock and focal plane pin for focus measurements....will know on Monday whether there are further European taxes added....this is all pre order pricing...their established cages look good...heavy duty (my need) and according to their Product Manager the GH5 landed up being a challenge for them.

Here's another contender, this one by SHAPE:

Looks interesting, but I'm still leaning towards the MovCam.
I like some Shape stuff, but it looks like they still use the Panasonic HDMI lock that comes with the camera, which though a nice thought on Panasonic's part to provide, is a joke...I'll only consider a cage with a proper HDMI lock...

Forgive me if this has been asked already, but there are any cages for the GH5 that can accomodate its battery grip?

You would probably have to get a universal type cage for larger DSLR cameras in order for it to work with the camera and grip.

I know the Wooden dslr cage will, but it requires a few extra bits to match the offset of the grips tripod hole. I did this for my GH4. Of course, with this cage the new audio module will not work because the hot shoe is used by this cage.

This one (at $95.00!) can likely do. It looks VERY "plain Jane" but it's actually a lot more flexible than you might imagine. Watch the videos on the linked page:

I have this cage and have used it with GH3, GH4, Oly OMD E-M5, Lumix GX1, and GX7. I have a Manfrotto 577 quick release adapter mounted in the bottom so I can slide any camera in with a 501PL plate in seconds. Just got a ZoomH6 audio recorder that mounts easily on top. At 78 I don't look to "hang" a bunch of heavy stuff on it but have had a 7" Marshall monitor on it. Got a bit lucky and was able to get one of the last Smallrig HDMI locks that bolt directly onto the 577 (for the GH4 I still have).

I have a GH5 but haven't had a chance to do much with it, but when I need a cage this is the one I'll reach for.

Great pic of that rig with a Mattbox and FF and Audio on the Panasonic GH5 group on FB

Has anybody found a cage for the GH5 that locks to the camera on the bottom and the top, as the Fhugen Honu cage for the GH4 does? I like this design, as the camera is really "locked in".

I think many manufacturers are avoiding this because of the GH5 XLR audio adapter.

Dang, I missed that one. I thought it was a cold shoe. Well I have a Rode videomic Pro, connected to the camera, with which I shoot IT. We normally use a sound recorder for sound so I doubt I would ever buy the XLR adapter. I was wondering why all the cages left out the cold shoe :)

Can you clarify difficult please, as I use the 2 wheels to adjust everything...if difficult, but possible I'm fine with it...if impossible I'm not...hard to tell from the photos you posted...a bit more feedback would be much appreciated!

It's not impossible, just difficult. But since posting that review I've grown used to it and now it's no problem.

It's hard to tell from the pictures but the cage has a 45 degree beveled edge at that exact spot to facilitate access to the front control wheel. So that's helpful.

I used the Fhugen Honu cage. The design lets you hold the left side of the cage but it is close enough that your fingers can reach the focus ring for fine focus. Drawback is that it is NOT a comfortable design to hold. I think the grip can be improved. The camera is mounted very securely and the bottom of the cage is compatible with an Arca style quick release. Big point: CHEAP
