Cable labels

I have a whole bunch of cables, and I'd like a method to quickly pick up what I need and also to avoid confusion on set. For example, most of the time I can tell just by looking if a cable is 10' or 20' but not always, especially when you have cables of different brands, or the lengths are like 20' vs 25'. So I figured I can put a bit of yellow gaffer tape right under the xlr (or whatever) connector, sandwich it so that a little tag is left on which I can write the length of the cable (f.ex. 10') and any identifying info or whatever. The advantages are: (a)quickly can tell how long a cable is (2)there is no dispute about whose cable this is and hopefully cuts down on instances when it 'walks away', (c) if I always put the tape tag at one end (f.ex. always male, or always female), it is that much faster for me to grab the right end immediately.

Anyhow, I thought to do it with just bits of yellow (for high visibility) gaffer tape on which I can use a black marker - f.ex. tape like this:

Visual Departures Gaffer Tape 1" x 55 yards (Yellow)

But maybe you have a different idea or different label system, or no label system - what is your solution, if any?

I use a (Brother) label maker for all sorts of labeling tasks like this. It has a keyboard, uses different size media, in different colors. It spits out a label instantly. When wrapped around a cable, it stays on pretty well and is great for a variety of other uses. The only downside is the tape seems a bit expensive and the printer eats batteries. But, it is real quick and handy.

Doesn't do you much good since you already own your cables (perhaps in the future) but for years I've made all my cables using colored bulk cable.
There are also colored boots you can buy that go over xlr ends to identify color.

These guys make all kinds of cool cable management and labeling tools.

I've personally used these:

They are cool and I would just use a piece of paper tape and put that on the actual plastic clip part and write down whatever it is I needed.

Speaking of cable management David...
I just bought a stingray bag a few days ago and purchased a number of your new cable hangers for the bag.
Love them. Much better than piggin straps. Nice work!

Clear heat shrink (over printed label) is my preferred method for permanent cable ID.
However, one cable end needs to removed.. which can be an issue for folks who can't solder.
As Dave stated, the RipTies are a good source.
