C500 MKII Leaked on Canon Rumors

Faster lens swaps when speed-shooting. That little bit of extra time required by the locking mount might mean missing some valuable content. Think fast-paced doc shooting, reality tv shooting, or BTS. Not only the speed issue but requiring two hands to swap lenses can be a pain when shooting solo and not having a place to set the camera down to swap lenses using both hands. For instance, if you are in a muddy area and you have no place dry to place the camera for performing a two-handed lens swap.

This reflects my experience as well. I have the EF Locking Mount on the C300 Mark II and usually work solo, swapping lenses definitely requires two hands. Also, requires a bit of focus to ensure the lens seats properly. A lot of life can happen when I'm lining up those red dots. Speed swapping in a difficult environment is a two person job for sure. Would be great to be able to swap mounts as an end-user.

The positive is that I can mount the 18 80 Compact Zoom without lens support. A bomber stripped-down set up for photographing verite on the streets.

That said, the C500 Mark II looks pretty great. Can envision purchasing one. Canon has done well keeping me in their system. The short drive to Canon Services in NJ certainly helps. No rush though. The C300 Mark ii still covers my needs just fine.

Core swx nano-C98 now on b&h - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1506755-REG/core_swx_nano_c98_14_8v_battery_with.html

Closer in price to the BP-A30 and well under Canon's BP-A60.

Wonder if there's a catch but looking good so far.

I've owned 2 Nano-C98's ( the verson made for Sony ) for a while now and use them when in light-weight config. Nothing but good things to say about them. No catch. Well, other than the Nano C98's for the Canon are significantly more in cost than the version for Sony cameras. The Sony version is only $189.

Jeez, big price difference. There must be more sophisticated electronics and/or they're trying to get some money back after sinking R&D funds into cracking the canon battery code, which took a while!

I can't wait to stop buying batteries.

I use the 18-80 on my C300 Mark II regular EF-mount without lens support often. No problems. I almost always use lens support with the heavier 15.5-47 and 30-105.

Well, the YouTube verdict is in. Our peers from "YouTube film academy" have concluded that the C500 mkII with a Rec. 709 LUT might not look cinematic.

And—needless to say—that means this camera is beyond rescue. Essentially a fool's tool.................
Aww man, I had high hopes for this camera. Oh well. I guess we can all stop discussing it, then.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but...

"From Canon USA: "Effective March 15, 2019, Canon's service operations located in Jamesburg, NJ will be closed. Repairs will no longer be accepted at this location after this date." The facility at Newport News, VA remains open."

Ah. Good to know. Don't have access to those mighty lenses but will def support them should the opportunity arise.

Thanks for the heads up about the Jamesburg location. Fortunately, I don't think it affects the location I use. There's a small Professional Service Center in an office complex in Lyndhurst, NJ. Last time I was there was to get C-Log for the 5D Mark IV, so it's been little awhile since I was out there. Hopefully they're still around.

Fingers crossed. It's a bummer when you take your gear to a service place for years and then all of a sudden, it disappears. That happened to me with Sony, had a great place in Burbank for years and then one day, took my Beta SP deck there and they were gone, place was boarded up. It's such a hassle to ship your pro gear to get it repaired.

Oof. What a drag.

Access to local repair services plays a part in camera choice for me. I also just prefer to interact with service people face-to-face. Like back in ye olden times...

Through the latest FD Times Magazine, I stumbled across an article about what is supposedly the first feature shot on the C700 FF (i.e. the same sensor as the C500ii). It's called "The Obituary of Tunde Johnson". There's no trailer online, but there are a couple of screengrabs:

Hard to make much of a call on it, as the grade is a pretty pushed teal/orange affair.

Morning,
this camera is really interesting. Afaik the focus can be set with the touchscreen, but how do you use it when the OLED Viewfinder EVF-VF70 is used. If I understand it correctly it uses the same port so it is either LCD screen or OLED Viewfinder (with the exception of the small rear viewfinder, which can be used simultaneously.

Something else I am curious about, the S&F button on the side is used to quickly (how quick actually?) change from a standard 25fps to a predetermined e.g. 50fps. Will it also change the crop mode? Can I switch from full Res 25fps to 2k crop 120fps with just one button?

Thanks for any input, I did not have the C500 on my radar, when I was at IBC Amsterdam. Maybe somebody else has had time to check it out somewhere.

best regards
Dominik

On Canon cameras with DPAF, you can move the focus box via joysticks on the handgrip, LCD screen, and body, I never touch the touchscreen on our C200, no need to and at longer focal length FOVs, you can often see the movement on the body to tap on the touchscreen.
Correct on the LCD Screen versus OLED EVF, you can only use either or. BTW, that excellent EVF-VF70 costs U.S. $6,000.00, a bit pricey for a $16k body IMHO, but I've used it and it's outstanding, just too expensive. I would probably put a Zacuto Kameleon or Gratical on it for 1/3 the cost.
I have no idea on the S&F functions until I get my hands on a review copy of the camera, I am on the list.

It looks to be a pretty great camera. If I was looking for a camera, I would be hard pressed to not buy this one. The Sony FX-9 looks cool too but I am in the Canon ecosystem already and I really dislike the FX-9's future RAW shooting integration. If you care about RAW, the FX-9 is
not the camera to buy. I've been shooting internal RAW on the C200 for the last two years, it would be really unappealing to go back to big, heavy external units to shoot RAW and the C500MKII has some really interesting options to shoot 2K RAW as well as the 4K and 6K. Exciting.
Our clients, at least, are starting to warm to shooting RAW for projects, I love it, shooting green screen with RAW is great. If you see any current season interviews with Bruce Miller, the showrunner for the Handmaids Tale floating around, that looks like set pieces behind him,
I shot that on CRL in RAW, that was our first client requested RAW green screen shoot earlier this year.

As much as I generally dislike the C series body design, the C500 is actually an interesting camera. If my OG C300 died on me and I had to replace it with another C series to serve one of my clients that does still use C's a bunch, the 500 would probably be the one.

Thanks for your reply puredrifting , that was very helpful. I looked into some C200 Tutorial Videos and I unterstand the different Focus Control options now. Really seems to be a great system.

Considering the viewfinder options, I own a gratical eye, so I would probably pass on the VF70, will look into the rear one though.

Can the C500mkII output 16-bit raw like the Fx9 or is 12-bit raw the max the C500mkII can achieve be it recording internally or to an external recorder?

There's no external raw output on the C500ii, it's 12-bit only (like Arriraw).
