C500 MKII Leaked on Canon Rumors

The Newsshooter article on the C500 MkII mentions use of the optional EVF-V70 OLED Viewfinder. But if you use that VF with the camera how do you access all the touch-screen features? In the photos of the C500 MkII where it has the EVF-V70 mounted the EVF-V70 is in place of the touch-screen and not in addition to the touch-screen as with RED cameras.

Do any of these touch-screen cameras feature a joystick that can be used in lieu of touching the screen?

There is a joystick on the back left of the camera, a joystick on the EVF-V70 OLED Viewfinder, and a joystick on the left side of the Canon EU-V2 Expansion Unit.

How is this possible? Did you forget to charge rentals on said past cameras?

LOL. Rentals? I don't like people looking at my camera let alone touching it.

By the time I had a really expensive camera, many online places were battling it out including the ones between regular people like ShareGrid and Kitsplit.

Any possible money coming in from a rental market barely exists.

Anytime I come out with my camera I’m charging a rental on it. Labor day rate for me, rental day rate for my camera package. If you’re not structuring your rates this way I HIGHLY recommend it. I’m financing two C200s and make more in rentals every month than I do in camera payments. Not only have my cameras not cost me a dime, they make ME money every month. By the time December rolls around and one is paid off I could sell it and put ~$4-5K towards a C500MKII purchase.

Same way I feel about my wife. If I had a wife.

I bought the Sony F35 brand new when it first came out. Never did get any rentals from it as Red and Arri took over. I found a nerdy film school student whose wealthy parents were supporting his education, told him my camera had been used to shoot Star Wars and was able to sell for camera for a great profit. Some investments do pay off.

I sometimes get rental requests. I tell them I come with my gear. They may offer to bring me on as a cam op with my gear for their DP to use. I don't like this but I do do it on occasion if they're renting enough of my equipment such that I'm making good money to work in a position (cam op) I typically don't enjoy. In many cases, they don't like my rates and realize they can get the equipment cheaper from a rental house or a place like KitSplit. I don't consider myself a rental house; I'm a DP with gear.

On the flip side, I get requests to DP using the client's equipment, and I then quote them my "DP w/gear rate." I don't work at labor only; too much gear investment at this point.

When I quote rates, I don't separate gear and equipment, because I don't want the client thinking they can talk down my base package which comes with all the necessities. Too often I hear, "We just need a camera and one lens for a two hour shoot," and I've got a camera, multiple lenses, a lighting kit, audio, Steadicam, etc., at a base package rate that includes me up to 10 hours. I don't want to work for a fraction of my full package rate because the client was able to itemize each item and get me down to a lower rate. No, it's, "DP w/full gear package." That's my rate.

I do have some a la carte items, like Steadicam Zephyr, cinema zoom lenses, etc., but most stuff stays in the base package rate.

It looks like Canon is withholding footage until the IBC (there's one clip that claims to be C500 MKII but it's been out for several weeks already). Otherwise, the reviews are very favorable.

What about Amira Coughlin? Is she not real?

Oh, I didn't even think you were asking about that kind of renting/fee.

I don't work this way and I never will. Quite frankly I would be too embarrassed.

I know that's how people used to/still do it, but the people I work with wouldn't understand what I am saying to them.

If I want to make some extra money I'll just increase the rate for my brain/skills; not the camera I already own.

There's a big difference...

- I would tell you colors vary based on the brain.

- jcs would tell you which colors are best and accurate.

- DLD would tell you a story about colors.

It's like a well rounded team of superheros. Together you'd be unstoppable.

Interesting, to each his own I guess.

I've raised my rates a few times over the years and about 2-3 years ago raised my labor day rate to more than what I used to charge for me + camera package and then I charge a camera package rate on top of this. I was really scared to do it at first, but it's worked out great. This way when I get hired by a producer that wants to shoot on (fill in the blank camera that I don't own) I still make my full day rate and then the client pays for the other camera rental (usually I work it into my invoice for convenience). Then on the jobs that hire me and are good with using my camera package I'm making my full day rate plus camera rental day rate that I pour directly into paying off my camera or buying more gear.

So making my full day rate is not dependent on my gear at all and if they want to use my gear I get the bonus of "making" even more than I would have.

I wasn't thinking about that, but it sounds like a good thing for both of us.

I've been getting into acting lately. Thinking about quitting my DP job and applying at restaurants. Some people recently have told me I should try stand up for my dry humor, so what could possibly go wrong.
