"C" Settings, wait a minute...

Hi-

Maybe I'm missing something here, but plowing thru a bunch of threads I'm seeing 3 or 4 different combinations of bitrate settings all called "C" settings for AVCHD.

I was under the impression that 40/46/50 was C, and now I've seen 50/52/60 and 38/40/42 called C as well. What gives?
 
There was an old C settings I believe. The real C settings can be found under ptools
 
Progress and updates...thats what gives =) whatever is listed as "C" in the current ptools is the up to date setting. best thing to do is find out for yourself which of those setting is stable for you and your style of shooting.
 
OK I see about the version in Ptools, that should have been obvious, thanks!

About the link to the sticky, that's exactly what I was talking about, The second post lists:

"AVCHD STABLE SETTINGS FOR 1080P

C Settings:

-Video bitrate adjustment - c)40000000
-Overall bitrate adjustment - c)46000000
-Limiting bitrate adjustment - c)50000000"

and immediately below that, first line in the next post:

"...AVCHD settings I have found so far are 50,52,60 (the "c" suggestions)"

So hopefully you understand where the confusion came from, my guess is I'm not the only one.

And who says you shouldn't get excellent footage with pulldown and higher bitrates? The pulldown is more a hassle in the post production than much else. You remove it with Voltaic or Neoscene or some NLEs will do it automatically. Nothing to do with image quality from the camera.
 
That footage really is spectacular... being smooth with a cam is never a bad thing... (freakin' kit lens again too... wow.)

Some folks are saying you need a class 10 for C settings in FHD. For the Red Rock video by Eric Thompson he shot at 40,50,70 and says was 100% stable with class 6 card.

So should class 6 be 40,50,70 and class 10 be 50, 52,60? Why would Eric's limit be higher?

I think the version 4 of ptool they are working on maybe mapping cards to settings from the screen shot but in the interim, I'm ready to install.

He also didn't have the 24p native checked on, and from what I gather that's making a difference in stability for a number of AVCHD-shootin' people.

I could shoot with the original "C" settings (or whatever, that's a whole 'nother mess, but they were 40/46/50) with 24p checked on with a class 4 card (kodak) and it works great until I hit a highly detailed scene, lots of texture, on a tripod, static, then pow, write error.

Stability or rather instability is related to setting native 24p and higher bit rate settings.

I recall that the 24p setting removes the 60i wrapper .

Therefore I assume would make compression work less through the codec and cause more disk activity writing the output versus compression which would cause more CPU time. So I can imagine that checking 24p requires a stable SDHC card to maintain the data output rate since I can imagine there isn't an unlimited amount of buffer memory.
