C-Mount Angenieux 12-120 F2.2 on AF100?

Hi all,

Just wondering how this lens performs on the AF100. I realize it will vignette when wide but how is it from 25mm onwards?

Thanks!

It vignettes the whole way. I am selling one on eBay right now. One could only use it on a gh2 in crop mode.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. How badly does it vignette? If it's not too bad then it could still be used by shooting in 1080 and cropping down for a 720 project. Or is it really bad? Any screengrabs would be greatly apprciated!

It's pretty bad. It's like looking through a tunnel. I didn't even bother to ever record anything with it so I don't have any grabs. Sorry.

Do all of the Angenieux cine zooms vignette like this on the af100?

would the ones made for super 16, or ones converted for PL mount be any different?

Any 16mm or Super16 zoom is going to vignette awfully. The AF100's sensor is over 3x larger than a frame of 16mm film. Over twice as large as Super16.

Remember, the AF100's sensor is about the same size as 35mm movie film.

Angenieux made several 35mm zooms and those would of course work, but don't hold your hopes out for 16mm zooms.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, you saw a lot of those 12-120's on pro 16mm cameras. A 10-to-1 zoom ratio was pretty extreme back then. It would probably work on a camcorder having 2/3 inch sensors. I think I remember there being an Angenieux 25-250 zoom for 35mm cameras. That should work on an AF100, if you can find the right adapter.

Too bad it doesn't work on the AF100, but such nostalgia in that lens for me ... as Ken Hull says, they were darned near ubiquitous on the 16mm news cameras of the '70s when I was learning to shoot. Most often with a crank on the side geared to the zoom ring to move it smoothly. Some had an attached beamsplitter and viewfinder arrangement sticking out the left rear side of the lens when we shot with Auricon and CP-16 cameras that didn't have an internal reflex mirror. The customized version for the Beaulieu R-16 had both variable-speed power zoom and auto-iris motors attached in little pods at the mount end. I used them on CP-16s, Bolexes, Beaulieus and Arri 16SRs at different times. It wasn't a spectacular lens optically even at the time (the much more expensive Angenieux 9.5-95mm and 9.5-57mm and the Zeiss 10-100mm were considered better), but you couldn't argue with the versatility of the zoom range and the practicality of the f/2.2 aperture. I bet more news footage, documentaries, instructional films and nature shows were shot with that lens than anything else in the history of the 16mm format.

I've often thought of picking one up on eBay just to own it, but it's a lot of money for a paperweight. :( I'm also kind of sick that I sold my Beaulieu 5008S super 8 camera in the early '80s in order to help finance my first serious video camera. The 5008S had an Angenieux 6-80mm f/1.2 (T/1.4 !) C-mount lens on it and I let the whole kit and caboodle, including a fluid tripod and a bunch of editing gear, go for $400 (which the SOB never fully paid, even at that).

Quick question. What is the equivilent focal length going from a lens designed for 16mm to M4/3? So a 50mm on a lens designed for a Betacam would be the equivalent of what when mounted to an AF100?

Thanks!

It's about 2:1, 50mm on a 16mm film camera looks about like 25mm on an AF100.

Uh... Barry, I think you have that turned around. A 25mm lens on a 16mm camera shows about what a 50mm lens would show on either a 35mm camera or an AF100.

I have just bought an Angenieux 1.5x teleconverter in C-mount. This will increase the projected image circle on my lenses, reducing vignetting right? It looks like a really nice teleconverter and I've never seen one on Ebay before. Paid £30 for it.

Well, that's not the intended purpose of a teleconverter. It's designed to magnify the center of the image, as if you had a longer focal length lens. I suppose there's a chance it might show the edges of the original image, which would fall outside of a 16mm frame, but it's only designed to cover the area of a 16mm frame. Anything more that you get is purely by happy accident. Maybe you could get an inexpensive C-mount lens and test it, then let us know what happens. (Hey, if this really works, I've got some Switar lenses for my old Bolex H16..... hmmm.)

Well B4 ENG lenses cover the whole AF100 sensor with a 2x extender on so I assume it is the same with C-mount leses? I have a Canon TV lens on it's way which has minimal vignetting on the M4/3 sensor, hoping the 1.5x extender will cover the full frame.

Also hoping the angenieux will retain sharpness better than other extenders.

We will anxiously await a thorough accounting of your findings!

Just paid for the 1.5x tele and have a c-mount lens arriving today. Also looking to buy an angenieux 12-120 or 15-150 to try out. I have added a picture of the teleconverter I bought. Never seen one made by angenieux before so I hope it's good!

The Canon TV lens I bought is used for CCD cameras I think so it will have colour fringing which is why I'm on the hunt for lenses designed for 16mm film.

any updates?

My advice take it or leave it.... Skip the 16mm native lenses on the AF100.

Something to consider besides the fact that they don't cover the sensor, is the focal flange depth, which is 17.52mm for C-Mount and 19.25mm for M4/3.
