Ideally, yes. I adjusted these grabs as an attempt to show more how they should look. IDeally, they are perfect out of the camera.

Re: byob

When I do a test on rendering and burning it on dvd, I play it on my dvd player and it looks just like any 16:9 movie playing on my dvd. The colors I gotta fix, and thats what I'm doing right now in Vegas.

Re: byob

Sir Hudson, could you please start a thread on monitor calibration? I'm having fits with it, and it sounds like you've had good success. Thanks!

I got to this.. must still aint looking right.. I'm trying to get John's look... but it's hard in Vegas. Oh well... I'll keep on trying.

Re: byob

Take the above image and with your color balance plugin, try boosting the blues a bit to decrease the yellows and then decrease the red level. From there you may need to adjust brightness/contrast to achieve the desired look. Hope this was helpful!

Re: byob

I'm a hack guys; I'd like to see Rich Lee or Matt McD Color Correct these babies.

As for Monitor Calibration? There are so many articles online on how to. I just learned this myself and would be very hesitant to try and 'give advice' on the matter.

" I'm a hack guys"

John, you've said that before. You're SO not a hack. But I can appreciate your ability to say, "I don't know." Lots of people would rather make something up than appear unknowledgeable.

Color correcting, monitor calibration, and just plain having a good eye. Wow, what an intimitading set of needed skillls. My wife has a Photoshop book whose author claims that color blind people who follow his principles/formula are able to perform 90% accurate corrections. I'll post the title later--it's at her workplace. I'll bet the concepts will translate to NLEs quite well.

That is very interesting. When I studied Art (Lela Hartley of San Diegos Robson Gallery) I was made to paint with values of only black and white in the beginning. The purpose was to learn 'values and hues' and 'contrast and highlights'. I'd be interested to see this article.

Well, I always joke with my wife that I have a Major in Film Theory but am a first year film student. :P :D

And, OMG you are right on the money with this one! "Lots of people would rather make something up than appear unknowledgeable."

LMAO!

Re: byob

Woodson's explanation said it all, the use of the filters really darkened the shots beyond being useful. (at least the meeting shots) I don't think any color correction can save them, it'll introduce too much grain. I'd chalk that project up to a learning experience. Not trying to be harsh here, just honest. I'd save the filters for exterior shots, or ad them in post.

Yes, it was my first and only short film shot with the DVX100a. But I'm not going to just throw it away, will finish it..

Thank you for being honest....

You guys, without all your help and being honest... I would be so Lost, this film would probably never be started if I didn't have you guidance. My passion is in Directing, and will continue following my heart till I die.

So thank you, thank you thank you all.
This board will ROCK forever!!! :D

Re: byob

i thought id give it a try not that i deserve to but anyway, the sqeeze bothered me so i unsqueezed it, but cropped the shot a bit. and the table reminded me of the oracle's house so i matrixed it. but hey, I DON'T KNOW.

Yeah baby yeah!

It only gets easier and better from here! kEEP SHOOTING!

Re: byob

It's not a filter problem, but the infimous example of a newbee eposing to the LCD. Exposure needs comprehension of the camera, the resources availiable (like a waveform, or just zebra stripes),and photography. you will get it when you discover that what you see in the LCD has to be brighter than you really want. Or how to use the marker, or when you get a propperly callibrated monitor on set.

I think the grain arising from CC will not destroy the picture, but will not be complimentary. CC it and finish it, of course!

Re: byob

This is somewhat true and good point.

I personally trust my LCD as I have no other method (onset/whilst shooting). I have my Iris set to Auto Underexpose by - 2. I hit AUTO IRIS once and then switch it off for RECORDING. I also use the ZEBRAS ont time to get a final look at what I am shooting.

Trust the camera!

Re: byob

I've been figthing with Vegas and this is what I got... nothing like John's I wish I could find away to make it like that ... but here it is.... tell what you think...

or

second.jpg

I think the first one, second one seems too bright?

and what's the sqeeze that ppl are talkign about?

Isn't it supposed to be 16:9? to me it looks like but then again I'm wrong a lot of times.

Re: byob

Change your properties to 400 X 220 and see if it 'proportions itself'.  Look at he styrofoam cup as it is stretched.

Keep playing with it and you'll see it pop all of a sudden.  For my example, I started with:

BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST while paying close attention to the Videoscope.

Used the Color Balance on LOW/MID and HIGH to reduce REDS and cool it down a little.

Used the Color Corrector in the same fashion and then applied the Secondary Color Corrector.

Be patient and use little movements.

PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE HIGHLIGHTS AND SKIN TONES OVERALL!

Which properties are that, when I switch them to 400X220 in the file, properties in the Video width 400 and Height 220... I get this...
