Bye bye Karma GoPro. You had no chance.

That's weird, the link works for me. Goes straight to the DJI press release about delays in shipping. Article says it could be 7-8 weeks before all orders are shipped.

It's nice to at least know what's going on. It's been said over and over again, but that kind of communication is super important.

Well this is terrifying...

my DJI MAVIC DRONE is GONE

Looks like a communication issue between the drone and the controller. Hope it's not widespread/common.

(PS - apologies if this was already posted; I read the last 5 pages and didn't see it...)

NYC is certainly near the top of the most congested radio signal areas in the world. Control was likely lost due to other transmitters interfering or simply due to conflicting signals from reflections off the buildings. Even if it has a GPS 'go home' feature, that also could have had issues due to all the signal reflections and interference from buildings.

I wouldn't fault Mavic for this.

That link didn't work for me, but I tracked it down. For anyone else having trouble with the link:

NEWS2016-11-03
Dear DJI Customers:

We owe you an apology for our delays in delivering the new Mavic Pro. We want to thank you for your patience and also advise that we are looking into improving our order process and systems, based largely on your feedback.

When we announced Mavic Pro and began accepting pre-orders, we expected to deliver the first units in mid-October. However, ramping up production to full speed at top quality took longer than planned. Prior to our scheduled shipping target, we encountered an issue integrating a part into the Mavic Pro. We resolved that within a week. On top of that, the excitement for the Mavic Pro beat our expectations. As a result, we are working diligently to ramp up production to meet the higher-than-anticipated demand for the Mavic Pro.

We have been shipping for nearly two weeks, but even with round-the-clock production, we unfortunately cannot give specific delivery estimates for many orders moving through various global sales channels because of this demand. For Mavic Pro orders received before November 3, 2016, we will do our best to clear them all within the next seven to eight weeks.

Some of you waiting for your Mavic Pro also expressed concern about our immediate billing of pre-orders. We've heard you and are examining potential alternatives with our payment provider.

DJI exists to put amazing technology and innovation into your hands, and we're sorry it's taking so long with Mavic Pro. Our internal systems haven't kept up with the enormous demand for our products, and your enthusiasm for our newest offering is spurring us to improve. We appreciate your understanding and are doing everything we can to get Mavic Pro to you as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

DJI

I think this might fall under the "magic of television" or how to keep a storyline running, regardless of its RG comms status the drone will remeber its take off point and go home.

Looking at a few reviews of the Karma and the drone part looks a bit like rubbish. The camera is fine as is the hand gimbal but as a drone the Mavic wins flat out.

That'd be even more terrifying for me personally, then. Check the sig.

Should I not bother buying a drone in NYC?

Hope you're right about that; I'd just say forget it if that's just the risk of flying in NYC like Paul F says...

... Should I not bother buying a drone in NYC?

As always, it depends.

1. A drone can only operate on line-of-sight signaling. It doesn't do well with metal buildings in-between. If you are among tall buildings, forget it. Signals reflect off the metal framework and get blocked.

2. Drones operate on the same frequencies as WiFi. So imagine the congestion and competition to get a signal in a dense metropolitan area. If your Mavic is on the same frequency as an apartment's WiFi, as the drone passes the apartment, the WiFi signal from the apartment will be stronger to the drone and it will jam your signal.

3. The go-home and self navigating features rely on GPS which needs several satellite signals to operate. If you are in the trenches of tall buildings, the Mavic will not be able to see enough satellites to navigate or go home.

Has anyone here got their hands on a Mavic the pre-ordered?

Yes. I've had my Mavic Pro for 2-3 weeks. Put a pre-order in within a few hours on the first day. My second battery hasn't arrived yet though, it should be delivered within the next week. They've been hit with massive numbers of orders and are struggling to fill them.

Even DJI have a few bugs to work out. I've seen a problem with controller calibration with a spinning Mavic as a result and some cameras are really soft on the right side. I actually cancelled my order in wait for these things to be worked out and other stuff that might pop up.

Same exact strategy here Osslund. I hate being an unpaid guinea pig for corporations, early adoptership is rarely satisfying, it's usually filled with regret, "Man, I should have waited until they had the bugs worked out of it!"
I am thinking of buying one in the Spring of 2017. Most or all of the bugs should be worked out by then.
