Ok
This has probably been debated at length numerous times, but a quick search didn't give me an answer.
UV filter, HOYA 77MM PRO-1D HMC for $60, or spend twice the amount for BW MRC?

I'm only familiar with BW, no complaints, but if anyone has owned Hoyas, or Tiffens, always trying to save some $.

why do you want to use a UV filter? just to protect the lens from scratches, or for some other reasons?

because the sensor on your digital camera already has a UV filter built in:

read here, where the lensrentals blog (written by a guy that knows more about cameras and lenses than I could ever hope to learn) says:
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2010/12/the-glass-in-front-of-your-glass-all-about-filters
"If you have a Leica M8.2 you need UV/IR filters, etc. but not many other people do, so we’ll limit this to filters of general usefulness"
and then
"UV. There, I listed it. I’m not going to even get into the discussion about lens protection. I just want to point out that the need for UV filters are basically a film need, the majority of digital cameras don’t benefit from filtering UV light. That function is built into the camera. So if you feel the need for a protective filter a UV, clear, haze, skylight or whatever will give you the same benefit."

and, because of that, they won't even rent you a UV filter unless it's for a leica M8.2:
http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/leica/accessories/uv-ir-filter-for-leica-m8.2
"UV/IR filters are only available along with the rental of one of our M-mount lenses"

For a UV filter, I think the BW is overkill. I use BW exclusively for my ND's and polarizers, but my UV filter (lens protection only) is usually just a $30 tiffen or so.

I've never scratched a lens in normal shooting. I only use the UV filter if I am in a situation that isn't typical (I've done a lot of sports shooting, so I never know when a ski or a rock is going to shoot at my face)

A more practical reason, considering the 17-55IS which I've heard is a dust magnet and also that using some type of filter will help keep the dust out

true on the dust. I guess I just clean my lenses religiously before I go on a shoot / check the lens after every take

but I would just go with the Hoya. I still feel the BW is overkill for the price

Will probably go with Hoya but get the S HMC.
Also read great things about Hoya CPOL (KenRockwell.com??). That it transmits almost a full stop more light than other CPOLs. And Maxsaver.net has them at a great price.
