BW D90 10 min "G7MW"

not sure if i really like the story, but its sort of a cool surreastic piece.

That said, i LOVE the look, the shots, etc...

How did you achieve those pan shots so smoothly?

What did you use to edit, to change to black and white?

What lighting setup did you use?

Thanks

jon!

I liked this one as much as your previous piece 'dala'. Probably more so. It reminded me of part of a dream I had once.

Good compositions, I assume you were emulating a classic composition style to go along with the choice for black and white? I think these visuals transcend eras in that even in this modern age they are still as convincing and relevant now as storytelling tools.
The more modern shots of the gunshot, reminiscent of the 3 Kings explanation of what a bullet does inside the body, still fit nicely in the whole.

Overall very well done, it feels like it is part of something much larger. Is there more to come in this story?

Great job!

Workflow

Workflow

I co-directed this with pveal and will put in my thoughts regarding the workflow:

We built the set in my house for convenience sake. With the time available now the work flow was as follows:

Shot on D90. From here the problem was getting something to play and edit comfortably on the Final Cut 6 timeline. It was put through Compressor as Prores 422. This enabled a steady workflow within the Final Cut studio environment. For me functionality is very important in terms of productive work, it helps the creative ideas move forward and keeps the technical troubleshooting stuff out of the way, which can be a real pain for small/large productions.
After putting some shots through Motion 3, it went to Color for a touch up on some exposure, and corrections on the image. This was finalized by adding noise in FCP and lastly, applying Matt Sands Plugin to help with the stair stepping that comes with the D90 footage.
Sound/Music which I was mainly involved with, as I am a composer of music, was written in Finale, then recorded into DP6 at 24bit , 96000 Sample Rate and mixed in DP as well. DP6 had a nice XML file transfer to keep both DP and Final Cut on the same page for the whole editing process (if you do this be sure to read the big book carefully). Most of the sound was organic, or instrumental, with a view processed sounds (elec. guitar fired through Max/Msp processor).

I hope this gives some insight into the workflow. If you have any further questions or thoughts I would be more than happy to try to answer them for you.

Excellent short! Really liked your usage of black and white! I love your set -- it's very convincing. You really made the most of the D90! Your music score is terrific. I was slightly distracted by the loose ADR -- it took me a second to get used to it -- but I still enjoyed your short very much, nonetheless. Great work!

Thanks guys. Unfortunatley our production team is breaking up because David Rafferty (producer, Composer< Director) is moving to London (from Seoul) to the royal college of music,

Sorry to hear that.

Also it was too bad that I was not able to meet up with you guys while I was living in Seoul.

Best of luck with other future productions.

You guys gonna give me a nightmare...that was some freaky ****.

But good **** overall. I liked it.

The sound was pretty good too. What mic was used?
