Buzzing when converting mp3 to AIFF

I'm just wondering if there are any experts out there who can help me with this issue.

Lately, I have tried converting mp3 files to AIFF using TOAST to edit in Final Cut Pro but the converted tracks have a loud buzzing sound over the top making them unusable. This happened on two occassions. It's a pain to get the original .wav files from the composers because they are too big to email unlike the mp3s. I've never had this conversion problem before. Both of these files came out of Protools. I'm wondering if is to do with the pro tools settings?

Anyone else had this problem?

Hard to diagnose without hearing it. Can you post a sample?

I've not used Toast to do conversions... in fact, I've found Toast to be clunky on just about any task. There are two things I suggest without hearing the problem:

1) Full-rez AIFF or WAV files are much more easily transferred with FTP. If either you or the compser has a website, all you need is an FTP client (there are free ones like Cyberduck that will do the job, or FireFox's FireFTP add-on... or purchase one like Transmit). FTP allows for larger files than email. If you can work this out in any way, you'll be better off.

2) iTunes is your most reliable, economical method of converting MP3 files to WAV. But MP3>WAV is going to leave you with sub-par results. And depending on the MP3 resolution, you're going to have some pretty nasty artifacting (see #1 above).

Use the original WAV files. MP3 is unsuitable for any kind of production work. It is an end-release format only. Don't email WAV files, have the sender post them on any of several online file sharing websites and just download them. If you don't have a high-speed connection, then just download them overnight while you sleep.

MP3's are not at all ideal but depending on the quality and what your using them for they can do in a pinch. But that wasn't the question. You should not be getting any buzzing and you should not be using Toast to convert. Use QuickTime Pro. You have it because your using FCP so open the MP3 in QuickTime and export as an aiff file.

Thanks guys! That's really helpful. I'll try that and post a sample if it doesn't work. I'll look into the FTP option for the future. You guys are awesome! :2vrolijk_08:

There is a service called YouSendIt that allows you to transfer very large files without emailing. They have a free level and subscritption levels. A visit to their website will give you the details. I use them and they work perfectly.
