Buying Used DVX100s, Couple of Questions

I'm buying a couple of used DVX100s for about a grand each. All of them have about 300 hours or more used on the heads. What should I be looking for when I receive the camcorder (certain problems)? I will have a 60 days warranty.

Also, what is the price range of a used good conditiion DVX100? I found them for $1225 on eBay (regular, not A or B).

One final question, is it worth it to save more money and buy a DVX100B instead of the regular DVX100? I know there aren't much different in quality but still? Anyone?

Thanks.

That price seems high for a DVX100. With 300 hours, I think you can get a DVX100B for 12 or $1300. Perhaps you're paying for the 60-day warranty. There are a number of advantages of the DVX100 A (and even more of the B). One of the most helpful improvements, in my opinion, is the ability to monitor live sound on the DVX100B instead of experiencing the echo delay from tape.

Once you do buy, make sure the zoom and focus are smooth, that the firewire port works, that the lens is clean, etc. Check every single switch and control there is. Inspect the body to ascertain it has never been dropped.

Thanks Sopinsky. You made me have second thoughts. What is the price range of a DVX100B new?

The lowest I have seen is $700 and that was on this forum. on Craigslist you can find them for $800-1200, I wouldn't pay over 900 for just the cam, unless it had like supper low hours.

What's the downside of high hours?

I'm really asking technically like if someone had no knowledge on cars and asked what does high mileage does to a car?

With a car, you know how many miles it traveled but not how long it idled. With a DVX, you know how many hours it was on with a tape inserted. One would assume most of the hours were spent recording but it's very difficult to know for sure. By the way, 300 hours is really not very high.

Yeah I have heard that the DVX can run strong till around 900 with proper maintenance and know a person who surpassed 1k so 300 is not bad at all.

That's great then.

What would be some problems for some camcorders that have high hours on them?

I may check for that once I decide to buy even though 300 isn't a lot as you guys said.

Sorry...didn't mean to interrupt. I live in PAL land now...so NTSC DVX is not very useful.

Anyone have a decent still camera they want to trade for the DVX 100A

And yes, DVX 100's are still good.
