Buying my new computer!PC or Mac?

Re: Buying my new computer!PC or Mac?

Come on, you kow you want a Mac! Just buy that nice dual processor G5 and be done with it. I confess that I left Mac for a year for a windows machine and wanted to toss that thing out the window every day. My apologies to the Mac people. I'll never leave you again!

You can't play "13 Ghosts" with only 32K . . . :o

Re: Buying my new computer!PC or Mac?

I think that whatever you choose, one thing to think about is that you use this computer for audio/video production only. Don't use it to surf the web and such. In fact, I wouldn't evn hook up a modem. I may sound paranoid, but I've had problems with viruses in the past, not to mention ad-ware and the like. I've heard that this is less of a problem for Macs than PCs. At any rate, if the only thing your computer is working on is your video, it will probably give you fewer problems. Just something to think about.

Re: Buying my new computer!PC or Mac?

Either machine will be fine if you maintain it properly.  I've worked in both platforms and have never, ever had a system crash, because I am mindful of what's going in inside.  Video takes pretty much everything the machine has, so you need as little running on it as possible.

Whether you work on a Mac or on a Windows machine, if it crashes, it's almost certainly because of something you did or should have done but didn't.

Windows machines do have more problems with viruses and adware, but that's *entirely* because they make up 90% of the market and as such they are 99% of the target of creators of that kind of software.  As Jim says, proper precautions eliminate that danger.  I've never, ever, had a virus, for the same reasons I've never had a system crash.

But the worst thing you can do is pick a machine based on the machine and not the software.  Decide what software you want to work with first, and then go from there.

I work with Mac's .. so that would be my choice. Ive worked alot with both and Mac just does it for me.. plus all the the right programs are right there for an artist.. thats what a Mac is .. an Artists tool.. PC's are for games :) IMO

For hobbyists, PCs offer a better price-per-feature advantage. As long as you can deal with XP running on a 3rd party hardware platform and either keep the system offline or very carefully employ antivirus countermeasures, you'll be ok.

If, however, you are doing this for a living and can't afford downtime stemming from expansion issues, software conflicts, or viruses, I think a Mac is a better choice. As of right now, there are 50,000+ known viruses on the PC side and a big fat ZERO viruses successfully written for Mac OSX thus far. As soon as a potential avenue of vulnerability is discovered, Apple releases a free security update to protect you preemptively.

I have been running OSX on my machines for over two years now, surfing online every single day, with absolutely no viral protection software whatsoever. Try that with a PC.

I taught myself FCP HD in about 10 days. I haven't messed with chroma key and some of the other effects, but I have done keyframing, color correction, mp4 encodings using Compressor and QT, and all the usual transitions and audio engineering. Apple has a well-deserved reputation for user-friendliness.

I've done it every day for the past 3 1/2 years. I'm doing it now! ;D

Re: Buying my new computer!PC or Mac?

I'm sort of a PC person because I like to go inside my computer and upgrade parts as I need it. In the long run I find this very very cost effective as projects get bigger.

This was for stuff I shot with the sony dct-trv9. It's a good 3ccd cam but I NEEDED the dvx. 'Nuff said.

So now Avid Express DV isn't adequate to capture, edit and export 24 p. So I'm looking at Vegas 5.0 + DVD and building a PC on a mini mother board so it'll be the size of my 10" field monitor and be able to use it as with a DVrack as well....

Any opinions?
