Buying Mic Today!

I'm getting a Rode NTG1 for either $170 or $183.00 on Ebay. I'm getting the Boom for $149.99 of Guitar Center.

Any suggestions on the shock mount. I see there are three from $29.99 up to 59.99. Obviously the more you pay the better it is but why?

Weight?
Convience?

Should I just go middle of the road since I'm only doing shorts?

Also I have to get it to a 1/8" jack. Any ideas on a good cable that make it possible or should I use a device that does this, but those look to but $150+

Thanks,
Rich

When you say you're getting a boom from Guitar Center, do you mean a mic stand with boom arm, or have you found a GC that actually sells fishpoles?

If you have a little wiggle room on your budget, I'd suggest getting a Rode NTG-2 location sound package from DVCreators. The kit will have pretty much everything you're looking to buy, except that it comes with a fishpole instead of a mic stand. And it doesn't cost that much more than the total cost of what you listed.

The other thing you need to think about is powering for the mic. Since you're going to a 1/8" connection, you don't have phantom power for the NTG-1, and that's the only way the NTG-1 will work. With the location sound package, you get the NTG-2 which can run on a battery if needed.

As for getting it to a mini-jack (1/8"), you definitely want to get a converter box. Beachtek and Juicedlink both make very solid models.

Yeah I saw that before. It is what got me looking at Rodes in the first place. That is the boom pole I am getting from GC.

Phantom Power? Crap I asked someone else and they said most mics just used batteries now. Dang so the $170 will get another $60+ added right? Well that is what I found here

I did find this at GC - any good?

The converter box...crap Beachtek is $179.99 - can I survive with just a good cable for a bit or is it not even worth it? Because as much as I would like to get the $499 package you mentioned I really only planned on spending $400 at most not including cables and whatnot.

DVCreators is a great place to contact. And tell them you're from DVXUser.

Don't know who told you that, or what they were smoking, but most mics still use phantom power. And if you read the specs of the NTG-1, you'll see that it is Phantom only. The NTG-2 is essentially the same mic, but with battery option.

Seriously, for what you're doing right now, you're better off getting the NTG-2. Those Phantom power supplies are all well and good, but not for what you're doing. They take AC or DC power supplies, which means that as long as youre using it you need to be near a wall outlet.

There are battery-powered supplies out there (http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PH1A/) but these aren't always practical, either. And in your case, I'd say no. You're still adding cost that really isn't much different than getting the XLR adapter box.

Well, the cables are going to cost you another $50 at least, so you're now up to $450 including cables. And with the location sound package, you get the cables as well.

You could talk to DVCreators and possibly put together a less expensive package that includes the NTG-2, boom pole, cables, and a different mount. Try... they're really good people (I've ordered from them a few times and have always been happy).

As for the converter box, well... you could get an XLR>1/8" adapter cable. That would ceratinly be less expensive. One thing the box adds that the adapter will not... tactile level control. Something to think about.

You should call them. Talk to Jesse. He'll take care of you.

But it's good not to rush into a purchase and get what you need rather than to rush and buy something you'll regret later.

Hi Richke,

One option that we can do for you on the DVcreator Location Sound Package 1, is to take out the K-TEK slip over fuzzy and replace it with RODE Deadcat, plus a Sign Video single channel XLR-Jr adapter. That'll still put it at $499 - shipped free, and you'll have XLR.

The K-TEK fuzzy has foam and can take more wind, although if you're outside, I'd suggest saving up for the RODE Blimp at a later date. If this sounds good, go ahead and order online and just copy the above into the comments field during checkout.

@C2V - thank you for recommending us, we truly appreciate it.
