Buying Lenses Instead of GH3

Are you going to be using a follow focus/rail setup? If so then the Rokinon Cine lens already has a focus gear, something you would have to add to the Nikon. If not then the Nikon should work fine.

My question remains why the Rokinon cine 35mm t1.5 at $550, over a nikon 50mm 1.4 at 200-$300 less?

...I personally think you would be better off buying used Nikon AI-S lenses, as I think you need to experience the image these lenses produce first hand. ( I know for myself the best way to learn is always hands-on experience )

The Rokinon Cine lenses are useful if your camera is on 15mm rails and you plan on having a dedicated focus-puller while you shoot. You can always add lens gears to the Nikon AI-S lenses. ( either clamp-on gears, or having a permanent gear added by a lens modification company )

The main reason I suggested the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AI-S lens is that it will produce a very different visual look compared to your current Lumix zoom lens, it's low cost, it's easy to find and easy to sell afterwards if you want something different. Once you've spent some time shooting with this lens, you will gain a better idea of what faster lenses can do for your shoot, and some appreciation for low cost older ( but still high quality ) glass.

The Nikon Series E "new" lenses ( the newer design has a bright aluminum ring next to the aperture control ) are also worth investigating. The optical quality of most of the Series E lenses is as good and sometimes better than the more expensive AI-S lenses, and you can find these selling for as low as $30+ on eBay.

either of these will effectively be a portrait lens on an m4/3 camera. and at 1.4 / 1.5 shooting wide open will result in a usable focus depth of just a few inches. both would be handy. but i wouldnt use either as my primary "cinema" lens

I'll bite -- what would you use as your primary cinema lens?

Placed the order for the $550 Rokinon Cine 35mm t 1.5 yesterday. Are you saying, if you were me, you'd send it back and use the money to buy used Nikon lens that can pretty much do the same thing?

NO!

if youre not going to read what weve all, ALREADY told you more than once - IN TWO THREADS!. then i see no reason to bother further re-discussing it with you.

the last thing i'll bother saying is check my most recent reply in your other, nearly identical post

Did you take a vote on that or are you speaking for yourself?

It's a good lens, and a great way to start your prime lens collection. I think you will be very happy with the look of this lens.

Now I'm trying to decide between the 35mm version ... or 24mm version ... or 14mm version.

Any thoughts on that?

I would start with the 35mm T1.5 as this will give you a look that is not achievable with the lumix zoom you currently own. Eventually you will want to own a complete set of lenses, but the 35mm T1.5 is a good starting point.

Thanks.

It took a long time for me to get that simple answer, but it was the one I was looking for.
