buying hackable gh1 off ebay

Just wanted to know if anyone has had success buying hackable gh1 bodies from thisisde1 off ebay. He sells body only gh1's and I have one being shipped to me as we speak and I am EXTREMELY paranoid that i bought the new hack proof version because it is being shipped from Taiwan(from what I understand a lot of folks are getting the recent models from there.) Also was wondering what the chances are of the newest version of the firmware(hackproof) ever being hacked. Thanks for everyones time.
 
Nobody will be able to give you peace of mind. Unless you can ask the seller to check firmware version in Temp. service mode you will not know for certain.
Regarding firmware hacking - nobody will be able to offer anything but speculations.
My theory is that the chances are very slim. There will only be something to hack if Panasonic releases a new firmware version for public download. GH1 and GF1 are at their end of production life and there may be no reason for Panasonic to release Firmware.
I am personally very close to selling my week old GF1.
 
I have just received delivery of a GH1 body from different Taiwan seller. I had the same concerns as you after reading recent posts here. After a bit of initial grief, mostly caused by me not knowing what I was doing, I have successfully hacked the camera.
I have a feeling that this was an NTSC model but as I live in Australia it is now PAL. I initially had a problem with Japanese menus etc but then I realised I had to tick the language box in the Ptool.
Everything works great now.
PS: This camera showed version number 1.3

I bought a Gh1 from this seller, and can confirm that it was hackable -- the serial number indicates that it was manufactured in 2009. Note that when you mod your firmware, use the version increment setting to increase the firmware number to something like 1.36 or so, because the in-camera firmware will have been hacked by seller for sale to english-speaking buyers.

Not sure what the warranty situation for these grey-market cameras is, though. Anyone know? The price is certainly right, anyway, and I was very satisfied with their service.

Doesn't matter- once you hacked it, the warranty is void, is what I was told. No big deal. What would be worse is to send it in, and get it back with 1.34 loaded which would ( maybe ) lock you out from re-hacking your camera.

I can't wait to see what Canon has coming. The Hacking is fun, however the inconsistency is getting quite tiresome...

Pomoville you made my day. Thanks so much. I should be getting the camera in a couple days. I haven't been so excited about something in a long time. You guys are amazing and this is the first time i've actually participated in a forum. I will post results with camera and help with testing.
 
Does anyone know if his GF1's are hackable? And do hackable GF1's have 24p, 60p and manual controls? Thanks, I have been reading but I wasn't sure what the answers were.
 
If I decide to get the GH2, I will definitely sell my GH1 which was bought last year. At the time, I bought an extended warranty so before I sell it, I will send it in for a tune up so I'll be as good as new although I might keep the 10x lens. Hopefully nobody will __________ with the firmware once I send it in.

What was the price? I may be able to get some GH1's here in Tokyo and ship them for cheaper.
Might be new or good second hand, but I can hack them first to make sure everything is ok. I've noticed a few Gold GH1's recently in one shop with serial numbers FS0Axxxxxx (January 2010) and two of the cameras were within 9 numbers of each other.
e.g. I think this shop was splitting GH1 + 14-140mm kits, selling the lens, and then the body separately, so these ones were unused, but sold as second hand.


Doesn't PayPal have some sort of dispute resolution process if there's a problem with the camera not being what the buyer was told?
